Sports Report Wednesday 22nd Nov ‘09
The Newcastle Town Moor Marathon succeeded in attracting many of the
country's most prolific marathon runners to the event.
Newcastle’s city centre marathon consisted of flat traffic-free tracks,
grass paths and footpaths running through & around it’s historic Town
Moor.
33 of the limited entry field of 122 runners belonged to the UK's 100
Marathon Club, a club specifically for those who have completed in excess
of 100 marathons.
Race Co-organiser and 100 Club member Jim Manford, of Warkworth, ran his
128th marathon on the day, while 4 of his club mates taking part have each
run in excess of 500 marathons to date. Among these is Steve Edwards,
Double World Record Holder for both the "Most Number of Marathons in a
Year" (87) and Winner of the "10 Marathons in 10 Days Challenge" (2008)
The marathon, in a big city, was in no sense a “Big City Marathon,” no
cheering crowds of street supporters or party atmosphere but a gruelling
event circling 5 laps around exposed parkland on a cold, Tyneside,
November day! Having said that, the organisers made it as comfortable as
possible for the entrants before and afterwards
First home for Alnwick in 3hours 32minutes was Jim Lillico in overall 24th
place and 4th in the over 50 category, followed by Chris Atwell
in 3hours 42min in his 4th marathon of the year and only weeks
after competing in the Snowdonia Marathon, third for Alnwick was Charlie
Gillon in a credible 3hours 50min considering Charlie hadn’t fully trained
due to other commitments before his race date.
A successful day so hopefully the event will be staged once again next
year.
Snowdonia Marathon Saturday 24th October 2009
Last weekend a group of Alnwick Harriers travelled to North Wales to
compete in what is claimed to be the toughest marathon in Britain,
atrocious weather conditions before and during the race added to the races
reputation. A mile into the race 1,357 runners set off up the Lianberis
Pass, at Pen y Pass (1,100ft) Chris Atwell lead harriers over the top with
Bridget Peberdy Anne Allan and John Cockburn pleased to have a long
downhill section to recover from the long climb.
Snowdonia is an area of outstanding beauty and this helped take the
runners minds of what was to come, at thirteen mile the race headed up
hill again for a mile passing through the village of Beddgelert. The
runners enjoyed a flat section of about eight mile before the sting in the
tail, at twenty one mile a sharp right turn was followed by a rapid two
mile climb to Bwlch y Groes (1,200ft), at this point you could see the
finish two mile below at Lianberis. The steep decent was agony on the legs
and running down hill was not easy at this stage, coming into the finish
the crowd were great and helped ease the pain.
The race was won by Juilan Macdonald, Chester Tri in 2hr 46min.
Harriers Times:
Chris Atwell 3hr-44min, Bridget Peberdy 4hr-17min, Anne Allan 4hr23min,
John Cockburn 4hr-40min.
Thanks from the group to Andy Squires who took some fabulous pictures.
Loch Ness Marathon 2009
Loch
Ness Marathon Race Report 4/10/09 by Dave Kirkland
The
Saturday saw typical Highlands weather - 50mph winds and rain, but Sunday
dawned perfectly - bright and calm. The Marathon starts beside Loch Ness,
with a fleet of buses provided to transport runners from Inverness to the
start point. The buses were scheduled to leave 8am, but with runner
numbers up 50% on last year, it looked like were a few buses short! At
8:45 we were still sat in Inverness, with the last few desperate runners
going from bus to bus until we all squeezed in and were able to set off
just before 9. This delay caused another...some runners had boarded at
7:30, onto buses with no toilets! The buses were in a police escorted
convoy, so a pit stop was out of the question...until with 10 miles of
single track road left until the start, our driver, fearing mutiny, broke
ranks and stopped in a passing place, to our great relief! Setting off
again, we could see across the treeless open country that we had set a
precedent - every passing place in sight had a bus in it! Given the
treeless terrain, it was interesting to see a common etiquette - gents
lined up to the front of the bus, with ladies squatting behind. It was
also interesting to see a split reaction from our bus to the spectacle:
From
the Ladies - "Oh what a shame! don't look!, don't look!"
From
the men - "Bum cheeks! Bare bum cheeks at 10 O’clock! Weh Hey!"
All
highly amusing, although the smartly-dressed locals driving the other way,
probably to Sunday service, looked like they might have disagreed. We
eventually rolled up to the start just after 10, and were underway at
10:50.
Personally, I had a great run. It's an inviting downhill start, and
feeling good on the day, I pushed from the start feeling a new pb was on,
despite the hills to come. First half felt fast but comfortable -
reaching half way in 70:45, it was an effort to turn the brain off (too
fast! too fast!) and listen to the body, which was giving no worrying
warning signs. 2nd half was a bit lonely with no-one in sight
but the scenery is amazing on this course and support good towards the
end. I even picked out a Geordie accent supporting around the 24 mile
mark, but was too tired to pick out who it was (thank you!) A 73:10 2nd
half brought a big new pb and a satisfied smile. This was really a team
effort – I could not have achieved it without the years of amazing support
and encouragement I have received from all my friends at Alnwick Harriers
– a big thank you to you all.
Baxters laid on a great post-race meal – soup and rolls, followed by
crispy-skinned baked potatoes with chilli or curry, accompanied by live
music. Good as it was, I couldn’t help remembering the home baked cakes
after this years Tynedale Harriers 10 miler – our Northumbrian cooks could
really teach the Scots a thing or two about tasty cooking!
