Welcome
Alnwick
Harriers
would like
to welcome your child to the club and provide you with some information
about our activities. The club provides opportunities for young athletes
between the ages of
8
and
16
years
to
receive coaching in
endurance athletics events and also sprints, throws & jumping events.
All coaching is by qualified UK Athletics coaches who are trained and have
been screened for their suitability for working with young people.
The club is
presently applying for
Sport
England's Clubmark, which is awarded to clubs by
UK
Athletics
when the club is able to demonstrate that it meets the
UK
Athletics
criteria as to playing programme; child protection; sports equity and ethics
and club management. Clubmark is an acknowledgement that we take these
issues seriously and that we are striving to provide a high quality and
welcoming environment for young participants in the sport.
Training
sessions for endurance events take place on
Tuesdays, between
6 & 7pm at
Lindisfarne
Sports
Hall.
There are six groups catering for different abilities. Athletics training
for sprints, throwing and jumping events, take place on Thursdays, between 6
& 7pm, also at Lindisfarne Sports Hall.
We welcome
parents to all training and competitions and value your support. We are
keen to try and involve parents in the club and if you would like to know
more about the club, or play a greater role within the club, please do not
hesitate to contact any of the club officials. (Listed at the back.)
What do we do?
On Tuesdays we run! We
aim to improve running technique, speed and endurance through training
sessions that in-corporate relays and other team games, within a fun
enjoyable environment.
On Thursdays we
alternate between throwing, jumping and sprinting events. We cover
everything from hammer throw to javelin, triple jump to pole vault and
sprint relays to hurdles.
where do we meet?
We meet at the
Lindisfarne sports centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Both training sessions
start at 6.00pm prompt and finish at 7.00pm.
How good do I have
to be?
We aim to
cater for a variety of abilities. And training schedules are designed for
athletes of varying standards.
What do I have to
wear?
You should have
appropriate trainers for running in, a comfortable t-shirt and tracksuit
bottoms or shorts. We train out of doors in all weathers, so clothing
appropriate to the weather conditions should be worn. Reflective running
bibs are provided by the club.
Do I need anything
else?
How much does it
cost to join?
What if I want to
compete?
Club membership allows
access to cross-country races, some road/trail races and also both track &
field competitions; at regional level and beyond. Club athletes can compete
on a team, as well as an individual basis.
At regional level the club enters teams into the ‘North Eastern Harrier
League’ and the ‘North-Eastern Athletics League’. Beyond regional level, we
compete in the ‘Northern Cross Country Championships’, ‘National Cross
Country Championships’ and the ‘Young Athletes League’.
Note that club vests must be worn at all of these events. As well as there
being regional/ national races there are also ‘friendly’ competitions within
the club.
