TRAINING CANCELLED Tuesday 9th February
Unfortunately, most of the coaches have a meeting at the Duchess’ High
School next Tuesday; therefore we have taken the decision to cancel training
for that evening. We are aware that many of you have missed quite a bit of
training lately due to sessions being cancelled because of bad weather; for
that reason we would like to offer you the chance to train in your usual
groups on Thursday evening instead. This will be at the same time of 6-7
pm, also at Lindisfarne Sports hall.
Exceptions to this are Sue Skirrow’s sprint group, which will be competing
at the indoor series at Gateshead on Thursday evening.
Alnwick Harriers’ Coaching Team
Sports Report Thursday 21st January 2010
The third
Gateshead Harriers Open Indoor Series took place on Thursday evening.
Once more
the junior Alnwick Harriers dominated the high jump event, with U13s Peter
Skirrow and Alexander Tait taking first and second. On his third attempt at
the height, Alexander jumped a massive 5cm personal best, matching Peter’s
1.25M. U15 Myles Foggon’s 1.35 was sufficient for second.
The hurdle
event overlapped with the high jump event and Peter chose to pass on the
1.30M height, instead concentrating on the 60M Hurdles, where he finished
second. There was a further second place for Peter in the standing triple
jump competition, where he set a new club record of 5.36M. And Alexander
jumped an impressive 5.06M on his debut of the event to take third.
The 60M
sprint was the final event and Alexander continued his excellent form
finishing third, Peter took fourth. Facing tough competition, Myles
Foggon’s time of 8.77 seconds placed him eighth.
In the U13
Boys Grand Prix points competition, Peter Skirrow and Alexander Tait remain
in second and third places respectively. Myles Foggon dropped to third
place in the U15 Boys points competition.
Alnwick
Harriers next indoor competition is on Thursday 11th February at
Gateshead International Stadium.

Sports Report Saturday 28th November 2009
The junior
Alnwick Harriers were well represented at last weekend’s North Eastern
Harrier League, at Newcastle Town Moor. The junior’s relatively flat 2.1
mile course was made more challenging by the 3 inches of snow which had
fallen overnight.
The U13
Boys’ race was the first event. Peter Skirrow used his strength to his
advantage, to pull away from the main part of the field in the deeper snow
to finish ninth. Peter is now promoted to the fast pack. Running with a 1
minute 20 second handicap, fast packer Ryan Thorne was next to finish for
Alnwick, closely followed by Adam Shafiq and Daniel Mallen. Michael Hardy
completed the team and Alnwick’s U13s finished fourth.
U13
Yasmine Shafiq appeared comfortable in the difficult underfoot conditions
and finished sixth. Rosie Murton also looked strong and finished tenth.
Both girls are now promoted to the fast pack. Making her cross country
debut and competing at the lower end of her age category, Annabel Young
finished twelfth, ensuring a second place finish for Alnwick’s U13 Girls.
In the U15
event, thanks to some valuable input from his coach Barry Eastham, Joseph
Mallen continued his steady progression, storming around the course in 13
minutes 54 seconds and Joseph still had enough left for an exciting sprint
finish, to finish fourth. Second home for the U15s, Bobby Hardy finished
ninth. Both Joseph and Bobby are also now promoted to the fast pack.
Finishing sixteenth George Skirrow was the third counter, backed up by Nick
Clarkson; making his first appearance for the club.
Alnwick
Harriers next cross country event is on Saturday 13th February at
Wrekenton.

Sports Report Saturday 9th January 2010
The wintry
conditions deterred a number of competitors at the North Eastern Indoor
Championships last weekend. However, Alnwick Harriers Myles Foggon and
Alexander Tait braved the elements to travel down to the Gateshead
International Stadium to mix with some of the regions best athletes.
The
depleted number of entrants meant that Alnwick’s jumpers had limited
recovery between jumps, but U13 Alexander Tait’s 1M 20cm was sufficient to
earn gold in the High Jump. And Myles marginally missed his high jump goal
of 1M 50cm but equalled his PB of 1M 45cm to take silver.
Alexander
took a further silver for Alnwick in the long jump, setting a new club
record with a jump of 4.01M.
On the
second day of competition, faced with some tough opposition, Myles set the
second club record of the weekend, sprinting the 60M in 8.70 seconds to
finish fifth.
All standards are welcome to join Alnwick Harriers. Our junior section
meets 6pm at Lindisfarne Sports Centre on Thursdays for sprints, throws &
jumps training and 4.15-5.15pm at the Duchess’ High School on Fridays for
High Jump training. Sorry, our Tuesday’s endurance training is currently

Sports Report Thursday 19th November 2009
The second
of Gateshead Harriers Open Indoor Series took place on Thursday evening.
Three junior Alnwick Harriers braved the wintry conditions to travel down to
Gateshead’s indoor facility.
Reaping
the rewards of recent training sessions at Monkton Stadium, the three
harriers showed their expertise in the high jump. Peter Skirrow finished
first U13 Boy and Alexander Tait’s superb technique saw him take a very
close second. U15 Myles Foggon also took second place, setting a new club
record in the high jump, when he cleared 1.45M.
Unfortunately Peter and Alexander both lost points when they missed the
start of their hurdles event, which overlapped with a crucial part of their
high jump competition. Moving on from the high jump to the Shot Putt
competition however, they were able to recoup some points, finishing third
and fourth respectively.
The 60M
sprint was the final event of the evening. A very strong run from Alexander
saw him finish third and Peter took fourth. Myles Foggon held his form
throughout, to set his second club record of the evening. His time of 8.77
seconds placed him fourth.
In the U13
Boys Grand Prix points competition, Peter Skirrow dropped to second place
and Alexander Tait moved up to third. Myles Foggon moved up to second place
in the U15 Boys points competition.
Alnwick
Harriers next indoor competition is the North Eastern Championships on
Saturday 9th January at Gateshead International Stadium.

Sports Report 15th December 2009
England
International, Alnwick Harrier David Kirkland took a break from his busy
training schedule last week, to share some of his experiences with his
fellow club members. Notching up the UK’s third fastest marathon time this
year in the V35 category and the second fastest 50K time in all categories,
David presented the awards at Alnwick Harriers Junior Presentation evening.
Yasmine
Shafiq ran away with the most awards, where her ‘all-round’ ability saw her
collecting trophies for ‘Cross Country’, ‘Field’, ‘Endurance’ and ‘Jumps’.
Joseph Mallen collected the boy’s ‘Cross Country’ trophy for the third year
running.
‘Track’
awards went to Peter Skirrow and Jessica Young and Jessica’s spectacular
shot putt in the summer season, saw her take home the girl’s ‘Throws’ trophy
too. A succession of wins in the Hammer throw event last season saw the
boy’s ‘Field’ trophy go to George Skirrow.
Ryan
Thorne’s Grade 4 standard 1500M, meant he took the ‘Endurance’ award and
Myles Foggon’s Grade 3 standard in the 100M and Grade 4 in the High Jump,
meant he took both the ‘Sprints’ and ‘Jumps’ trophies.
Georgia
Jobes sub-30 second 200M saw her take the girl’s ‘Sprint’ trophy once again
and Kieran Foy’s impressive 9.21M in the Shot Putt meant he also won the
boy’s ‘Throws’ trophy for the second year running.
Ben
Davidson and Alix Eastham won the ‘most improved boy’ and ‘most improved
girl’ respectively.
The final
trophy of the evening recognized David Kirkland’s success and contribution
to the club; new for this year ‘’the future’s bright trophy’, presented by
David Kirkland’ rewards endeavour. David said ‘I received a very similar
award myself when I was starting out as a runner, I therefore appreciate
exactly how much it will means to have effort and endeavour recognised in
this way. I am indeed deeply honoured to have my name associated with such
an award.’ David presented the award to Joseph Mallen, together with a pair
of his ‘trademark’ Oakley sunglasses.
