Sports Report, Sunday, 22nd
June 2008
Last weekend, the
Alnwick /Blyth alliance consolidated again for the third match of the Young
Athletes League, at Monkton Stadium. With winds approaching gale force down
the home straight, all hopes of fast times were blown away; however, once
more Alnwick & Blyth rose to the challenge to finish third team. And with
only one more match to go, Alnwick & Blyth currently lie third overall.
On the track the wind
offered the sprinters no favours and everyone’s times were well down, but
there were still some notable performances. Making his debut at the Young
Athletes League, 11 year old Myles Foggon completed the 200M in 32.7 seconds
and a brave performance from Caitlin Brown saw her finishing second in the
70M hurdles.
800M runner Chris
Sweeney, looked uncomfortable in the strong winds, but managed to maintain a
steady pace to finish second. Also competing in the 800M, Louise Swordy
incredibly ran a personal best time to finish third. Staging a come back
following a ‘lay-off’ due to injury; Bethany Barker finished second in the
1500M. Charlotte Ramsey won the 1200M for Blyth.
Running his second 400M
of the day, Bobby Hardy helped Alnwick/Blyth through to second place in the
U15 4 x 400M relay. Alix Eastham and Georgina Anderson both ran strongly in
the U13s 4 x 100M relay, to help take the team through to a further second
place.
Alnwick fared better in
the field events. Joseph Mallen comfortably won the Long Jump. Myles and
Joseph both took second in the ‘A’ & ‘B’ High Jump events. Matt Hardy also
gained maximum points for Alnwick/Blyth in the High Jump and he triumphed
once more in the Triple Jump, winning the event with an incredible jump of
12.35 M. There were plenty of wins for Blyth in the field events too; U15
Kirsty Johnson won the Long Jump. U17 John Lazarri also won the Long Jump
and the ‘B’ string Triple Jump and U15 Craig Charleton won both the Discus
and Javelin.
The final Young
Athletes League Fixture is on Sunday, 20th July at Monkton
Stadium.

Sports
Report Saturday, 21st June 2008
A group of junior
Alnwick Harriers took part in the Blyth Beach Races on Saturday. Star of
the show was Yasmine Shafiq, whose sensational performance saw her storming
through to an unexpected victory against some tough opposition in the one
mile event. Competing as one of the younger entrants in the U13 category,
Yasmine took a decisive lead early on and finished strongly, to attain a
well deserved first place in a time of 6 minutes 33 seconds.
There were commendable
performances from her fellow team mates too; also competing in the U13
event, Joseph Mallen was fifth boy. The U11 event brought some solid runs
from Adam Shafiq, Peter Skirrow and Daniel Mallen, but Adam proved the
stronger runner on the day, taking second place in his race. Peter Skirrow
and Daniel Mallen took fourth and sixth places respectively.

Sports
Report, Saturday, 7th June 2008
On 1st
June, the Alnwick Harriers’ juniors combined forces once more with ‘Blyth
Running Club’ for the second match of the Young Athletes League, at
Gateshead International Stadium. Cold, wet conditions meant that fast times
weren’t expected; however, Alnwick & Blyth rose to the challenge and some
significant results throughout the match meant Alnwick & Blyth finished
third team.
On the track, Under 15
Georgia Jobes continued her improvement in the 100M, completing the distance
in a PB time of 14.2 secs to secure second place, which given the
conditions, was no mean feat.
Chris Sweeney
comfortably claimed his second win of the league, in the 800M. Younger
brother Alex went on to win the 800M ‘B’ event. Louise Swordy and Georgina
Anderson also clinched wins in their respective 800M ‘B’ events. A gutsy
performance from Joseph Mallen, saw him taking nearly 5 seconds off his
1500M PB time, to finish fifth in a time of 5 minutes 21 secs. Taking a
massive 12 seconds off his previous 3000M time, James Woollett finished
third in the event, with a time of 10 minutes 20 seconds.
More points were
accumulated in the throwing events. Matthew Grundy took second in the
discus. Kieran Foy took a further second place, setting a new club record
in the Shot Putt, with a throw of 7.32M. Also in the Shot putt, George
Skirrow threw a PB to finish fourth. Making a surprise debut in the hammer
event, Bobby Hardy exceeded all expectations to take another six points for
the club. Louise Mullen took a victory for Blyth, in the javelin.
A saturated runway made
for tricky jumping conditions in both the long jump and triple jump.
However, Matt Hardy triumphed again in the triple jump, winning the B event
for Alnwick. Caitlin Brown took second place in the Long Jump ‘B’ event,
adding to the second place she achieved in the 70M hurdles.
The next Young Athletes
League Fixture is on Sunday, 22nd June at Churchill Playing
Field.

Young Athletes League
There’s a special mention to everybody who took part in the last ‘Young
Athletes League’ competition. The conditions were very wet and weren’t
great for competing, but everyone gave their best and the club finished
third overall. Well done!
The next fixture is at the Churchill Playing Fields on Sunday, 22nd
June. If you are able to compete that day, then please let me know as soon
as possible. We need to have as many children competing in support of their
club as possible. If any parents are available to help also, then please
let any of the coaches know.
Young Athletes Meeting
The next and third young athletes’ meeting is on 15th June at
Gateshead International Stadium. This is suitable for school years 3 to 6.
The fourth meeting is on the 20th July, also at Gateshead. If
we can get at least 10 athletes to compete at this meeting then we’ll
organise a coach in conjunction with England Athletics, to take both Alnwick
Harriers and Star Track Scheme participants down to the meeting. The bus
will have to leave Lindisfarne Middle School at 8.00am, returning for
2.15pm. If you would like to take part, then please register your interest
as soon as possible. For further information, then either speak to Sue
Skirrow or contact Chris Boundy, the Community Athletics Coach on 07824
302920.
Junior Beach Races
Blyth running club are hosting their annual beach races on Blyth Beach on
Saturday 21st June at 10.30am. There are races for Under 6’s

Monies still owing
There are many people who have still not paid their event fees for the
Shildon Meeting and the Les Allcorn Junior run. There are also a number of
children who joined the club last term who have still not paid their
membership fees, if you are unsure, please see Sue Skirrow to find out
amounts owing.
Level One Coaching Course
On Saturday, 20th September England Athletics will be holding a
Level One Coaching course at Willowburn Leisure Centre. The course starts
at 9am and finishes at approximately 5pm. It contains a mixture of both
theory and practical. If anyone is interested in gaining this
qualification, then please speak to any of the coaches.

heels; Chris taking the prize for first U15. Joseph Mallen was fifth

Sports
Report, Tuesday, 19th May 2008
This weekend saw the
Alnwick Harriers’ juniors combining forces with ‘Blyth Running Club’ to
compete in the Young Athletes League, at the Sheepmount Stadium, Carlisle.
Entering in the second division, this is the first year that either club
have been represented at this national competition and despite being several
athletes ‘down’, the Alnwick/Blyth coalition showed much potential,
finishing third after their first fixture, hinting at better things to come.
There were a number of
notable performances in the Alnwick camp. First to compete in the track
events, Georgia Jobes broke the 30 second barrier to finish sixth in the
200M. There were no serious threats for Chris Sweeney in the 800M and he
looked relaxed throughout his two laps, winning by a comfortable 30M
margin. In the 70M Hurdles event, Eliza Sandford was rewarded for her
recent hurdle training, maintaining promising technique throughout to finish
third. In the 400M Bobby Hardy ran an even race against some tough
competition to finish fourth overall. Also competing in the 400M, Matt
Hardy managed an impressive 56.8 secs, to claim third. Sensibly pacing his
1500M race, Joseph Mallen looked comfortable for the first two laps and then
dug deep for the final lap to finish second in a time of 5 min 26 secs.
Stephanie Robinson took a victory for Blyth in the U15 Girls 1500M in a time
of 5 min 25 secs.
In the field events, on
his final attempt, after two ‘no throws’ Kieran Foy was able to ‘produce the
goods’ when it really mattered, throwing 6.90M to take first place in the
Shot Putt. Winning the triple jump competition, Matt Hardy made the event
his own, with an incredible jump of 11.36M. There was a further victory for
Blyth in the long jump, when U15 Kirsty Johnson jumped 4.39M
Of the Alnwick/Blyth
alliance, junior coach Sue Skirrow said ‘Alnwick Harriers’ junior section
has always enjoyed good relations with Blyth (Running Club), so it made good
sense to unite for the purpose of the Young Athletes League. In forming a
combined team, we were able to produce the numbers needed to compete and
also maximise the strengths and minimise the weaknesses of each club. This
weekend has also been a useful exercise in demonstrating that whilst there
can still be a healthy rivalry between local clubs; at the end of the day,
we’re all out to promote, develop and enjoy athletics in the region.’
The next Young Athletes
League Fixture is Sunday, 1st June at Gateshead International
Stadium.

Sports Report 12.05.2008
Alnwick Harriers’ U15s,
Chris Bell, Matthew Grundy, Georgia Jobes and Jake Morrison competed over
two days of competition at this weekend’s North Eastern Counties Track &
Field Championships, at Gateshead International Stadium.
In the endurance
events, Chris Bell and Matthew Grundy both ran strongly in their first track
events of the season. Competing in the 1500M Chris finished ninth in his
heat running a respectable 5 min 12 secs and competing in his weakest event,
Matthew finished sixth in his 800 M heat with a time of 2 min 42 secs.
Sprinter Georgia Jobes’
recent work on her starts clearly paid off, as she knocked over 0.6 second
off her previous 100M time to finish fifth in her heat with a time of 14.24
secs. Georgia carried her improvement through to the 200 M event to finish
with a time of 30.0 secs.
In the field events,
Jake Morrison continued his recent strong form, taking bronze medals in both
the high jump and the shot putt. Jake’s jump of 1.45M, 10cm higher than his
nearest rival earned him third. And in the shot putt event, where only 8cm
separated the top three places, Jake’s throw of 7.10 M gained him a further
third place.
Runners aged
over 18 years of all standards are welcome to join Alnwick Harriers. Meet
6.45pm every Wednesday at Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre and
afterwards at The Grapevine. Sorry, our 8-16 year old junior section is
currently over-subscribed.

Monday 21st April
The first of the ‘Young
Athlete’s Meetings’ took place this weekend at Gateshead International
Stadium. Annabelle Young was Alnwick Harriers’ sole representative and she
did not disappoint. Competing in the Under 10 category Annabelle came
second in the 60 M and an impressive time of 1 minute 23 seconds meant that
Annabelle was the clear winner of the 400 M. A jump of 1 M 72 cm was
sufficient to gain second place in the Long Jump, meaning that Annabelle
takes a total number of 16 points through to the next round. The next
‘Young Athlete’s Meeting’ takes place at Gateshead Stadium on Sunday 18th
May.

Tuesday 1st April
Training
There will be no training during the two-week break. Training will resume
as normal on Tuesday 22nd April. General athletics training will
move to 6.00pm on Thursday 24th April at Lindisfarne Sports Hall.
Tuesday, 25th March 2008

Training Groups
From and including Tuesday 25th March, all training groups will meet
at 6.00 pm. This is partly because grant money, which we had received to
fund the 7-8pm additional hall hire has now come to an end.
There will be a new general athletics training session (sprints, throws and
jumps). This will commence at 6pm on Thursday 24th April. Unfortunately we
were unable to hire the hall until the start of the summer term, so until
then training will remain at 3.45-4.45pm. If you wish to put your name down
for the General Athletics Training in April, then please let me know, there
are still approximately ten places left.
Anne Marie Readshaw Memorial Open Track and Field Meeting
Hosted by Shildon Running and Athletics Club, this meeting is one of the few
track events open to U11s (minimum age 9) and takes place at the Stadium
2000 Arena, Shildon, 12 noon, Sunday, 13th April.
The training groups that currently meet at 6.00pm have implemented a six
week training schedule, to take us up to that date. We would like to see as
many junior harriers taking part as possible. Although we are focusing on
the 600M (U11s)/800M (U13s, U15s) event, there are also other events that
can be entered and coaches will offer advice on which events individuals
should be entering.
The additional events include: 60M(U11s)/100M(U13s, U15s);
150M(U11s)/200M(U13s, U15s); Long Jump(U11s, U13s, U15s); High Jump( U13s &
U15s only); Cricket Ball Throw(U11s)/Shot Putt(U13s, U15s). Costs are £2
per event. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are able to
attend. I shall be sending in a ‘block entry’. For further information
please ask any of the coaches.
Sue Skirrow
Training Groups
In order
that we can accommodate a new intake of runners, we have established an
extra training group. This has meant that we have had to
re group the existing Alnwick Harriers. We
still have two groups training at 7 pm, but will now have four groups
training at 6 pm. Many children will find that they have been moved across
to other groups and we anticipate that there will be an overlap of abilities
between the groups. These changes will be reassessed in a few weeks time,
but were necessary in order to try and reduce the waiting list.
Despite
now offering over seventy training places on a Tuesday, there are still many
children on the waiting list. Can I therefore remind both children and
parents of the training criteria, which was signed upon renewal of their
club membership.
We
will be strictly enforcing these criteria.
Many
thanks to all those parents who have offered to help with Tuesday training.
If anyone else wishes to become involved with helping on a Tuesday, or even
helping at competitions, then please talk to any of the coaches.
After training
Can
parents who did not sign a permission form for their child to leave alone
after training, please remind their children not to leave the building,
until a responsible adult has come into the building to collect them.
