Minors Cross Country Championships/Alwinton Show Fell Race

Over 250 Under 11 athletes from clubs and schools across the north east gathered at Bedewell Park, Jarrow for the Minors Cross Country Championship on Saturday 14th October. The childrens categories were split into year groups where a minimum of three boys and girls were required to form a team from school year groups 4, 5 and 6.

Alnwick Harriers made excellent representation filling a team in every age group. The races varied in length from 1km to 2.5km over a muddy, hilly course. The teams finished highly in most categories with top three places and there were also some good individual performances with several top ten finishes.

Several of the older Alnwick juniors competed at Alwinton Show also on Saturday, taking on the hilly 3 mile course. Max MURRAY JOHN (U13) and Lauren BROWN (U13) were first home for Alnwick in 6th and 8th overall place. These were excellent results in a combined race containing runners up to the age of 16. All the athletes coped well with the tough course that most Seniors find hard going!

Inter League Athletics Championships

Over 200 junior athletes represented their region at Middlesbrough Sports Village for the Inter League Athletics Championship between the North East and Yorkshire on Saturday 2nd September. To represent the North East team the best athletes were selected from the regions 3 divisions that extend as far as south as Harrogate. Talia THOMSON was chosen to compete in the Shot Putt and Lauren BROWN the High Jump and 800m.

Lauren made a good start in the high jump but unfortunately strained her knee and went out the competition having jumped a respectable 1.25m. Unfortunately Lauren was then unable to compete in the 800m, however, she was pleased to represent the region and gained some valuable experience.

Talia THOMSON has had an excellent season breaking club records and making sufficient progress to be ranked number two within the north east. Talia had a good competition but couldn’t quite manage her usual best throws of over 8m. However, a good throw of 7.74m did secure her third place position amongst some excellent competition.

It was an excellent achievement for the two athletes to be selected for this standard of competition and the experience will help them significantly in the future.

Tartan Games 2017

Talia THOMPSON represented the Junior Harriers on Sunday 27th August at the Tartan Games, Gateshead stadium. The games are the north easts final open competition of the season and attract strong competitors from across the region. Talia has thrown well all season in three disciplines; shot, discus and javelin. But the shot put is where she has excelled. Going into the competition Talia had previously smashed the club record, won several competitions within the North East Youth Development League and is currently ranked number 2 in the north east of England!

Talia’s good form continued and although she didn’t manage yet another club record her throw of 8.06m comfortably won her the competition. Well done to Talia!

Talia has been selected to represent the North East at U13 level against Yorkshire in an inter county competition next weekend. We are sure she will be successful!

North of Tyne Athletics Network Meeting

The final match in the North of Tyne Athletics Grand Prix proved to be exciting with several Alnwick junior athletes in contention for medals. Fifteen Harriers competed this season with 7 of them making all the four meetings. The series is a great introduction to track and field events and an excellent opportunity for beginners to experience a competitive and friendly event.

Connor CAROLAN (Y4) has had an excellent first season managing to finish in third place overall. Similarly, new to track and field, Oscar CHISOLM (Y5) did exceptionally well to achieve 2nd place in his category. Billy CLAYTON (Y6), now a veteran of the competition, fought a close battle all season with Jonah BURDON

of Chester le Street to be narrowly beaten to second place by only 3 points, a very close outcome as both athletes scored excellent totals over 850 points!

It was an excellent season of junior (minor) athletics and all the athletes showed great improvement, represented the club superbly and had an excellent time.

NOTAN 2017 Final Standings

North East Youth Development League, Fixture 3

At the third round of the North East Youth Development League on Sunday 25th June the Alnwick/Blyth team had to perform well to match their second place result at the last track and field meeting. However, a depleted team due to busy summer weekends, meant it was going to be a tough task.

In the high jump Ollie TELFER, Alex THRELFALL and Joseph GODDEN all represented the under 15’s. In a close competition Joseph managed a jump of 1.30m, Alex 1.35m and Ollie 1.40 to finish the competition in third place. In the under 13 competition Finlay TELFER and Sam THRELFALL both jumped well to come in 3rd and 4th place.

A prevailing wind in the long jump made conditions good. Euan FRIEND managed an excellent jump of 4.0m to take 2nd place whilst his sister Katie Lou jumped 2.76m in her competition to finish in 4th place.

NEYDL 3 2017

The windy conditions weren’t ideal for all events but the athletes succeeded in the throwing disciplines dealing well with the blustery conditions. Ben CARTER (U15) competing in his first track and field match faced some tough opposition with the UK’s number 1 & 2 ranked athletes in action in his category. However Ben kept a smile on his face and produced some good results at his very first attempt at the Shot putt and discus. Ollie TELFER competed alongside Ben finishing third in Discus and 5th in Shot.

The girls once again produced the best results in the throwing events. Antje HALL who won the County Championship only the day before managed to extend her own club record in the javelin winning her category with a throw of 22.66m. Meanwhile Talia THOMPSON (U13) won both the Shot and Javelin in her age group, an excellent achievement.

On the track Billy CLAYTON and Euan FRIEND both ran good 100m races. Billy followed up with a decent 200m and Euan ran a good time in the 75m hurdles. The team was short of middle distance runners on the day but Alex THRELFALL and Joseph GODDEN stepped up and ran the 800m finishing in 4th and 7th place.

Although short on numbers the team still managed to produce two relay teams. The U13 boys managed 4th place and the U15 boys 3rd earning some valuable points for the team.

Although short on numbers the Alnwick/Blyth team performed well and managed fourth place on the day.

Minors County Track and Field Championships

The conditions were good at Gateshead Stadium on Saturday 24th June for the Minors County Track and Field Championship. Six Alnwick Harriers represented their schools in this competition. They were required to complete two qualifying rounds within the region before progressing to the final.

On the track Billy CLAYTON (Y6 Lindisfarne Middle) qualified strongly for the 80m final beating some tough competition. After a shaky start to a quick race Billy came back strongly by 60m and finished in an excellent 2nd place. An excellent achievement amongst such a strong field of runners.

Lauren BROWN (Y7 Lindisfarne Middle) ran a superb 1500m race to once again become County Champion! Lauren ran steady for the first 500m maintaining second position before taking the lead for the next two laps. With 200m to go Lauren stepped up a gear and opened up a 8 second gap to win the race in excellent form.

Antje HALL (Y8 Wooler) continued her seasons excellent form in the javelin. Antje has steadily increased her own club record over recent competitions and on Saturday produced an outstanding performance to win the County Championship.

In the Long Jump Thea Scott (Y8 Berwick) produced a big jump of 4m 34cm win the Championship. This was particularly impressive as Thea had had two earlier failed attempts so to come back so strongly took exceptional nerve.

Max MURRAY JOHN (Y6 Wooler) ran a strong 800m to finish third in his race in a good time of 2m 34s. Finally Ellie PRICE (Y6 Newcastle) also ran the 800m and finished 6th overall. The six athletes produced an excellent set of results at the highest standard of competition.

North Of Tyne Athletic Network, Round 3

The fantastic weather gave 10 Alnwick Harrier junior athletes an excellent opportunity to perform at their best at Churchill Playing Fields, Whitley Bay this weekend.

Molly JOHNSTON and Tess HINDMARSH (Y4) were both competing in their first competition and did well to achieve solid mid table results. Leila THOMPSON, also year 4, jumped well managing a personal best of 2.88m in the long jump. In the boys category Connor CAROLAN had an excellent competition winning the 75m sprint and finishing 3rd overall on the day.

The three year 5 boys competed well together with Alfie TEMPLE running an excellent 75m to finish joint third place (12.0s) and Alex KNIGHT managing an excellent 2.82m in the long jump. Oscar CHISOLM ran a brave 600m leading throughout the race until the final 100m where he couldn’t quite hold on but managed an excellent second place. Evie GODDEN, the only Alnwick year five girl, did well in all her events producing another good overall performance.

Olivia TEMPLE (Y6) showed improvement in the howler throw coming third with a good 20.79m. Olivia also ran a determined 800m to ensure she achieved a good overall score for the morning. Billy CLAYTON had an excellent morning winning the boys 100m in 15.0s. However even with a massive throw of 37.41m he could only manage second place! Billys sister Emily (Y3) showed she has been practising hard by comfortably winning the howler throw (15.41m) and finishing third in her category overall.

It was a good morning of athletics and the improvement made by the athletes was very evident, it was encouraging to see them all competing and supporting each other so well.

North East Youth Development League-Fixture 2

The second North East Youth Development League athletics match took place at Churchill Playing Fields, Whitley Bay on Sunday 21st May. The 20 Junior Alnwick athletes formed an excellent team once again with their counterparts from Blyth Running Club.

The team finished third of six clubs at the last meeting and hoped to close the gap on Gateshead Harriers and North Shields Poly on this outing.

Once again throwing produced the team’s best individual results. In the Javelin there were victories for Gregor BATLEY (U13) and Antje HALL (U15). Both athletes managed personal best throws with Gregor extending his own club record to 25.24m and Antje’s setting a new record of 20.90m. There were also other good Javelin throws by Max BREESE (U15) and Ailsa BATLEY who managed second in her category. In the shot put Thomas DAVISON made his debut for the club at U15 and in the same category Ollie TELFER ( U15) managed a personal best throw of 7.86m to finish fourth. Talia THOMPSON won the under 13 girls competition with an excellent personal best of  6.48m which currently ranks her 7th in the North East of England.

On the track there were good performances from James GILHOLME, Joseph GODDEN and Sam THRELFALL in the 1500m. In the 800m Alex THRELFALL, Max BREESE and Ryan HARRISON FRATER all competed at U15 with Alex first home for the team in 2min31s. In the girls middle distance races Millie BREESE and Lauren BROWN represented the team well. Lauren had a cautious first lap but produced an excellent final 200m to finish the race in second place with a new club record of 2 minutes 37.

The sprinters also had some excellent results. Billy CLAYTON (U13) in his first competition managed second in the 100m and third in the 200m. In the 75m hurdles Billy again finished in 2nd place with team mate Euan FRIEND just behind him in third place. In U15 boys 200m Thomas DAVISON was first home for Alnwick with Ryan HARRISON-FRATER not far behind.

The girls did equally well in their sprint races. Hannah JOHNSTON in her first competition managed an excellent first place in the 100m with Talia THOMPSON and Katie Lou FRIEND also running well. Hannah had another good race in the 200m where she came third with a good first race time of 31.9s.

In the long jump Euan FRIEND again took first place in the U13 boy category with a good jump of 3.69m. The U15 boys did well with Alex THRELFALL jumping 4.15m and Joseph GODDEN 4.03m

Hannah JOHNSTON (U13) secured a second place in the long jump with a big leap that ended in a head first dive into the sand pit! Fortunately she was ok to continue but couldn’t quite beat the excellent 3.56m she set in the first round. In the same category but being a year younger Katie Lou FRIEND did well to jump a personal best of 3.0m. Antje HALL came close to her personal best in her competition jumping 3.95m.

Earlier in the day the U15 boys had competed well in the high jump with Ollie TELFER, Alex TRELFALL and Max BREESE finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. Ollie managed a jump of 1.40m to finish as runner up to Blyth team mate Jamie KYLE who jumped an excellent 1.50m

Throughout the mornings competition the Alnwick/Blyth team scored well but could only manage to maintain third place behind Gateshead Harriers and North Shields Poly. Going into the final events of the day North Shields had a commanding 150 points lead but Gateshead were only 24 points ahead.

The Under 13 girl’s high jump was the last event of the day but unfortunately ran at the same time as the 4x100m relay. Unable to compete in both events the girls couldn’t supply enough runners for the relay and had to sacrifice the valuable points at such a crucial time. The Under 13 boys however, did win their race following excellent legs by Billy CLAYTON and Euan FRIEND. There were also good performances by the U15’s but the team was unable to field enough athletes for the U17 races.

It looked unlikely that the team would manage to close the margin that Gateshead had opened on them but an excellent performance by the under 13 girls in the high jump saved the day. Lauren BROWN, Amelia FAIRHURST (Blyth) and Millie BREESE managed to take the top three places with Lauren winning with a personal best jump of 1m 26cm.

The success of the team on the day was undoubtedly attributable to a willingness by all the athletes to participate in events that weren’t necessarily familiar to them in order to maximise the points the team could score. Their attitude and sportsmanship was commendable!

The final score on the day was:

North Shields 720

Blyth/Alnwick 538

Gateshead 537

Wallsend/Gosforth 417

Jarrow & Hebburn 234

South Shields 130

North East Counties Track and Field Championships

Three Alnwick athletes competed over the weekend at the annual North Eastern Counties Track and Field Championship at Gateshead Stadium. On the Saturday Ollie and Finlay TELFER both competed in the High Jump competition. Ollie, competing as an Under 15, managed a good jump of 1.40m in windy conditions to finish in 5th place and Finlay in the Under 13’s had an excellent day and did well to take the silver medal in his competition. Ollie also competed in the Discus winning the bronze medal against some tough competition.

On the Sunday Peter SKIRROW, an Under 20, won the Long Jump with a jump of 6.55m. It was an excellent weekend of athletics with some excellent performances where several Championship records were broken.

North East Youth Development League

Junior athletes from Alnwick Harriers joined together with Blyth Running Club to form a team for the first athletics match of the season in the North East Youth Development League. The combined team of 35 athletes took on clubs from across the north east including Gateshead Harriers, North Shields Poly, Gosforth, Wallsend, Jarrow & Hebburn and South Shields.

Although it was a particularly windy day there were some excellent performances in the throwing events. Ailsa BATLEY (U15) broke the club record by almost 10 metres to win the javelin competition with a throw of 20.39m and Antje HALL wasn’t far behind with 19.22m to finish as runner up. Gregor BATLEY (U13) won the boys event with a new club record of 23.27m and Finlay TELFER finished in third place. Finlay also managed second place in the Shot Putt and his brother Oliver managed to finish an excellent third place in the U15 category. Ollie also competed in the Discus throw where he set a new club record of 21.30m and finished in third place. Talia THOMPSON (U13) managed second place in her javelin competition and won the Shot Putt with a good throw of 6.35m. Luke STUDLEY competed in his first U13 Shot Putt event and finished well.

On the track there were good performances by Ellie PRICE, Ryan HARRISON-FRATER and James CARRAGHER in the 800m and in the 1500m Alex THRELFALL ran a good time of 4 min 59s to finish in 4th place. Joseph GODDEN ran a good 1500m and also took first place in the 80m hurdle race. Ellie PRICE and Euan FRIEND both ran well in the hurdles with Euan finishing in 2nd place.

In the Long Jump Katie Lou FRIEND made her debut for the club as an U13 and brother Euan jumped an excellent 3.92m to win the boys competition. Antje HALL also jumped a personal best 3.96m to come fifth in her category.

It was an excellent day with some great performances, the team finished in third place behind North Shields Poly and Gateshead Harriers.

North Of Tyne Athletic Network 2nd Round

Also this weekend eleven minor athletes (Y6 & below) travelled to Whitley Bay to compete in the second NOTAN Grand Prix athletics match. There were some excellent performances all round with Billy CLAYTON winning several events to increase his chances in winning the overall series championship.

The series attracted over 120 competitors from across the north east so the Juniors did particular well to score so highly.

Modern Biathlon-National Junior Championship

On Saturday 25th March Junior Alnwick Harrier Ellie PRICE competed in the National Modern Biathlon Championship at Crystal Palace. Modern Biathlon consists of a separate swim and run with distances varying on the competitor’s age. Ellie raced in the U11 category where she was tested on a 50m swim and 800m run. Run and swim times are converted to points, with the final positions being decided by the total number of points achieved overall after both disciplines. Ellie had to qualify at a regional level to reach the national final where she finished in an excellent 65th place out of over 160 competitors. Well done Ellie!

Minors Athletics Meeting, Whitley Bay

The North of Tyne Athletic Network hosted their first meeting for minor athletes on Saturday 1st April at Churchill Fields, Whitley Bay. Juniors from school years 3-6 competed in a range of events that include a sprint, middle distance race, long jump and howler throw.

Alnwick Harriers fielded twelve juniors some competing for their first time others who are now veterans of the competition. There were some excellent performances and several of the athletes are already in a strong position to challenge for the overall Grand Prix titles.

Regional Athletics Sportshall Competiton

22 Alnwick Harrier Juniors travelled to South Shields to represent Northumberland in the regional Sportshall Athletics competition on Saturday 25th March. The team also comprised of athletes from Blyth, Morpeth and Tynedale Harriers who took on strong opposition from Durham, Tyne and Wear and North Yorkshire.

The athletes are required to participate in a range of indoor events with emphasis on competing as a team and encouraging the individuals to partake in a range of different track and field events. The Alnwick Juniors bonded together well with the athletes from the other clubs and formed an excellent team. In the final placing Northumberland managed to rank 2nd place in virtually all the age categories which was an excellent result against such strong competition.

Schools (Year 7) National Cross Country Championship

3 Alnwick Harrier Juniors travelled to Prestwold Hall, Leicestershire also on Saturday to represent Northumberland in the Schools (Y7) National Cross Country Championship. Hannah JOHNSTON, Lauren BROWN ( both Lindisfarne Middle) and Max MURRAY JOHN (Glendale) made the 200 mile journey with the rest of the team and had an excellent day.

The girls raced first and Lauren was first home for Northumberland in an excellent 21st position, whilst Hannah was less than a minute behind and finished 97th out of over 150 runners. Max ran next and managed an excellent 72nd place with the Northumberland boys finishing as 3rd placed team. The Juniors had a very long bus journey but managed to secure some excellent results to end a successful cross country season.

English Schools Cross Country Championship

Three Alnwick Harrier Juniors travelled to Norwich on Saturday 18th March to represent Northumberland in the English Schools Cross Country Championship. Ben KELLY and Dan FLETCHER both ran for the Senior Boys and Rebecca REED ran for the Senior Girls. All ran well and the county managed good mid table results in the overall championship. The English Schools Championship is the highest level that the athletes can compete at and it was a great achievement for the three of them represent their club and county.

North East Pentathlon

The North Eastern Counties Athletic Association held their annual indoor Pentathlon on the same weekend. Alnwick Harriers fielded three athletes in the event all of whom were attending their first major competition of the year. The event attracts athletes from across the north of England and Scotland.

Finlay TELFER (U13) had an excellent competition managing personal best performances in all his events. Finlays time of 13.53s in the 60m hurdles gave him a good start, finishing as 2nd north east athlete. Finlay maintained this position after the shot putt by throwing 6.12m, followed by an excellent high jump of 1.21m. Going into the long jump he had a 10 point lead over the 3rd placed competitor from Blyth but his jump of 3.37m wasn’t enough to maintain this and he slipped into 3rd. In the 60m sprint, the final event, Finlay had to manage his best to hang onto the third place medal. Fortunately he managed an excellent run and scored enough points to maintain his place and win the bronze medal in the north east championship.

Antje HALL (U15) ran a good time in the 60m hurdles finishing in 11 .81s which was faster than her recent personal best only a couple of weeks ago. In the long jump Antje fell just 1cm short of her new pb that she set only last Thursday. The high jump, a new event for Antje, almost ended in disaster after three unsuccessful practice jumps. However, Antje recovered and entered the competition at the minimum 1.0m height and after a shaky start quickly developed her confidence to finally clear 1.09m. A good result as failure in any event effectively ends your competition chances. Personal bests in the shot putt and 60m (9.00s) sprint finished Antje’s day off well in her first Pentathlon competition.

Ollie TELFER (U15) also had a good day with several personal best performances. His hurdling, high jump of 1.42m and long jump of 4.37m placed him well but a disappointing shot putt meant he had to run under 8.5s for the 60m to hold his 3rd place position. Unfortunately after a long tough day Ollie couldn’t manage this and finally finished 4th in the north east Championship.

The athletes performed well and their improvement in all the events was excellent. The outdoor season starts very soon and it is great that they have such a good foundation to work on.

Gateshead Indoor Athletics Series

Three members of the Junior Alnwick Harriers squad attended the Gateshead Indoor Athletics Series on Thursday 9th February. Antje HALL was the only athlete to race the 60m and did well to run a personal best time of 9.32 seconds. In the 60m hurdles Antje managed 5th place in her first indoor race.

In the Shot Putt brothers Ollie and Finlay TELFER won the U15 and U13 categories with Ollie increasing his personal best throw to 7.83m and Finlay missing out on a pb by 1cm! To conclude the evening the boys both ran personal best times in the 60m hurdles, with Ollie managing 11.69s and Finlay 14.19s.

The athletes had an excellent night of competition when the snowy weather conditions outside were pretty miserable. Their build up to the summer athletic season has started well and there will be lots of improvement over the coming months.

Inter Counties Cross Country Championships

Junior teams from Northumberland, Durham, Cleveland, Cumbria and North Yorkshire met for the Schools Inter County Cross Country Championship at Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria on Saturday 4th February. Alnwick Harriers fielded 6 athletes across all the age groups representing several schools from the surrounding Alnwick area.

The athletes were selected for the Northumberland team through two qualification rounds; firstly at Druridge Bay to represent North Northumberland and then by finishing in the top 16 at the County Championship.

The runners from the 5 counties were challenged by a tough course in testing conditions. The two steep hills on the wet and muddy course made for hard racing on a very cold day. Lauren BROWN and Hannah JOHNSTON were first to run in the Minor girls race (Year 7, under 12). Lauren ran a steady race moving up from 12th place on the first big hill to sixth by the end of the second long climb. After a good final decent and sprint to the finish Lauren gained two more places to finish in an excellent fourth place just 11 seconds behind the winner. Hannah, competing for the first time for the County, finished 37th in a field of over 70 runners.

Max MURRAY JOHN ran an excellent race in the Minor boy’s category and finished 19th overall. In the Junior Girls race (Years 8&9) Ellie HENDERSON had another great weekends racing. Last week Ellie ran in the Northern Clubs Championship at Knowsley, Liverpool and once again in Kirkby Stephen produced another solid mid table result. Ollie TELFER ran in the junior boy’s race and survived the longer two lap race finishing well.

Finally in the senior boy’s race Ben KELLY ran well and finished the 7.1 km course as first counter for Northumberland. This is an excellent result that will hopefully guarantee his selection for the National English Schools Championship in March.

North East Open Pentathlon Championships

On Saturday 24th September 3 Alnwick Juniors competed in the North East Open Pentathlon Championship. Athletes from Scotland and Northern England competed in this annual event which concludes the summer athletic season. The Pentathlon involves competing in five events; the sprint hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put and 800m.

Finlay TELFER and Millie BREESE represented Alnwick Harriers in the under13 category and Oliver TELFER in the under 15 competition. For the 3 it was their first year in new age categories so they were to be tested by some tough older competitors. The 3 athletes all performed very close to their personal bests or set new records in each particular discipline. Finlay and Oliver TELFER both set personal bests in the shot put and Millie BREESE ran an excellent 800m finishing second in her heat. Millies performance in the 800m was excellent as her category included twenty four girls of which the majority were a year older and a foot taller than her!

The athletes had a great day and although they won no medals on this occasion they all performed superbly and were rewarded with excellent results that were brought about by a good summer season of training and competition.

North East Youth Development League-Fixture 4

The final North East Youth Development League athletics match took place on Sunday 17th July at Churchill Playing Fields, Whitley Bay. With good representation this season the Alnwick Harriers & Blyth RC combined team have performed well and were looking to defend their excellent 3rd place position in the league.

The throwers did particularly well once again with the BATLEY family excelling in the Javelin. Gregor BATLEY (U13) threw a personal best of 23.38m and a new club record to finish in second place. The under 13 girls had a great competition with an excellent final throw of 20.32m by Ailsa BATLEY to win and regain her club record from Antje HALL. The girls are currently ranked second and third in the north east of England. The teams only shot putter of the day was Finlay TELFER who threw 5.36m.

In the 1500m Ollie TELFER and Alex THRELFALL ran brilliantly to finish in 1st and 2nd in the under 15 boys race. In the girls race Callie HENDERSON ran well to finish in 3rd place, and there were also some good times by Joseph GODDEN and Daniel FRATER-HARRISON. In the 800m Ryan HARRISON-FRATER ran well and finished in 6th place overall.

There was some excellent long jumping by the team. Ailsa BATLEY managed 3.65m, Joseph GODDEN an excellent 3.67m and Daniel FRATER-HARRISON 4.25m.

It was a very close competition for 2nd and 3rd place in the match. Tynedale finally finished on 481 points which was just 18 ahead of the Alnwick/Blyth team. This narrow victory was just enough to score the extra points required for Tynedale to finish ahead of Gateshead and win the overall divisional championship. The Alnwick/Blyth team finished in an excellent 3rd place ahead of Wallsend/Gosforth, Jarrow & Hebburn/South Shields. This is an excellent result which was a result of the consistent performances of the athletes and the excellent support by their parents.

North of Tyne Athletic Network Meeting 4

The final athletics match in the North Of Tyne Athletic Network Grand Prix took place on Sunday 9th July at Churchill Playing Fields, Whitley Bay. There were excellent performances on the day and some great rewards for those who had regularly competed this season.

Alfie TEMPLE ran the best sprint of the day winning the year 4 boys 75m race in 12.7s. Also on the track Erin BELISLE (Y5) ran well in the 600m to complete the race in 2min 19s and finish in third place.

Alex KNIGHT entered his first event for the Alnwick team and finished strongly in all his events, a great achievement having only had two practice sessions before the day! Evie GODDEN also performed consistently across all the events to complete a good season.

In the overall Grand Prix the athletes scores are added together from all the events and medals are awarded to the highest scorers. Olivia TEMPLE and Talia THOMPSON performed brilliantly and managed to achieve bronze medals in the girls year 5 and 6 age categories, whilst Gregor BATLEY managed an excellent silver medal in the boys year six competition.

Billy CLAYTON and Lauren BROWN have had excellent seasons with both athletes setting new personal bests and breaking club records. Billy (Y5) won the boys Grand Prix and Lauren (Y6) the girls. Furthermore they both won the overall competition for the highest scores achieved across all the age groups. Their achievements are well deserved and a reward for their consistent effort, perseverance and enthusiasm over the last three years!

All the junior athletes who have competed this season have done so with enthusiasm and have displayed excellent team spirit. They have represented the Club in an admirable way and have been a pleasure to support.

North East Youth Development League-Fixture 3

A strong team of Alnwick Junior athletes turned out for the third Youth Development League fixture at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow on Sunday 26th June. This was an excellent effort as several of the athletes had already competed at the Schools County Championship the day before in Hexham. A combination of warm weather, lots of practice and increased confidence produced some of the best performances of the season so far.

In the middle distance events there was some excellent racing with two strong category wins. Millie BREESE (U13) was first to race in the 800m. She lead from the break after the second bend, opened a twenty metre gap and then bravely hung on until the finish line winning in spectacular style with a personal best time of 2min 47s! Alex THRELFALL(U15) ran well winning his 1500m race with a confident run, whilst Max BREESE had a good race finishing three places behind Alex on a very warm testing day. Callie and Ellie HENDERSON represented the Club well in the girls under fifteen and under thirteen 1500m as did Joseph GODDEN (U13) in the boys race.

Antje HALL (U13) produced the star performance of the day in the girls javelin competition. The previous day in Hexham Ailsa BATLEY increased her own club record to 18.53m with an excellent throw but unfortunately this achievement wouldn’t last 24 hours! Antje twice threw over eighteen metres but her best throw broke the twenty metre mark setting an excellent new record and pushing her up the UK athletics rankings to second place in the north east of England. However, with two such good athletes in the club it is likely that even greater success will be achieved this season!

Hammer throwers Jack HALL and Owen WILLCOX picked up some valuable points in the under 15 event finishing in second and third place. There were more points scored in the  under 13 shot put where there were good personal best throws from Finlay TELFER and Talia THOMPSON. Jack HALL continued to throw all day and went on to record some solid results in the shot put and Javelin. Jude HALL managed some good throws over 20m and Max BREESE (U15) progressed the furthest in boys Javelin recording well over twenty one metres in his category (500g).

Millie ELLABY (U13) made her competition debut in the High jump with an excellent jump of 1.20m, quite an achievement for her first attempt. Ollie TELFER who has had a break from high jumping to concentrate on his hammer throwing made a good return to competition this weekend. Ollie started a bit slowly with no jumps at 1.30m but went onto to take joint first place with a personal best of 1.40m. Max BREESE wasn’t far behind and cleared 1.35m in his second competition of the weekend.

This week the juniors produced two new hurdlers when both Ryan HARRISON-FRATER and Euan FRIEND put their skills to the test in the under 13 boys race. Both enjoyed the challenged and most encouragingly agreed to try the event again!

It was a great weekend of athletics and good to see all the athletes enjoying themselves and improving so much.

Northumberland Schools Minors Athletics Championships 2016

9 Junior Alnwick Harriers represented their middle schools at the County Minors Athletic Championship in Hexham on Saturday 25th June. All the athletes were representing the North Northumberland area and took on the four other regions in the Northumberland & Newcastle area.

Lauren BROWN (Y6) continued her excellent season running a strong race in the 800m to win and become County Champion. Lauren lead from early in the race and comfortably won by 30m, an excellent achievement at such a large event.

Lauren Scholls 2016

Ailsa BATLEY (Y7) threw an excellent personal best and new club record of 18.53m to take second place in the Javelin. Ailsa then immediately ran to the other end of the Stadium to take part in the 800m final where she ran a strong race to finish an exceptional day. Continuing the teams throwing success Ollie TELFER (Y8) won the Hammer throw.

In the hurdles both Milli ELLABY and Antje HALL competed in the Year 7 heats with Antje progressing to the final and finishing in 5th place. Millie BREESE (Y6) also made the final in her age group and ran a good race to finish 7th.

In the high jump Finlay TELFER (Y6)  jumped well and cleared 1.15m, Max BREESE (Y8) also had a good day jumping 1.35m! Finally in the Year 8 middle distance races Max MURRAY JOHN and Ollie TELFER ran the 1500m and 800m. Both boys ran well in very strong fields of runners.

It was an excellent day of athletics where a good turnout provided an excellent Championship competition.

North of Tyne Athletic Network Meeting 3

A strong team of young Alnwick athletes returned to Whitley Bay on  Saturday 4th June for the 3rd of the North Of Tyne Athletic Network  Young Athlete meetings. As the season has progressed the younger members of the club have excelled and their performances have continued to improve.

Lauren BROWN (Y6) produced her best performance of the season in the 800m. Lauren ran a fast first lap but was confident enough to hold back, not overreact to a positive challenge from strong opposition and let the leaders establish a 20m lead. With 200m to go Lauren unleashed her startling fast finish and round the final bend clawed back the lead to win the race in 2mins 31.2s (G2) beating her own club record by 6s! Lauren also won the 100m (14.7s) and the howler throw (24.05m).

Having spent the previous two meetings developing his race strategy Billy CLAYTON (Y5) finally produced the winning formula. Running a steady pace for the early part of the race Billy positioned himself perfectly and 50m from the finish line moved confidently to the front and accelerated away from the opposition to win the 600m in 2min 03s. Billy had an excellent day also winning the long jump (3.28m), the 75m sprint (11.7s) and the howler throw (29.51m)

There were other good middle distance performances from Alfie TEMPLE (Y4) who finished the 600m in 2min 19s. Millie BREESE  and Finlay TELFER both ran good times in the Y6 800m.

In the howler throw the BATLEY boys once again demonstrated their family speciality. Ruaridh (Y3) on his 8th birthday produced another personal best throw of 28.51m and brother Gregor didn’t quite match recent form but a massive throw of 33.38m still gained him 2nd place. In the Y5 competition Mark CAROLAN managed a good throw of 28.04m to finish in second place and finally Leila THOMPSON (Y3) threw 10.31m to finish second in her category.

In the long jump Olivia TEMPLE (Y5) managed a good 2.75m and Leila THOMPSON came second in the standing long jump with 1.47m.

Talia THOMPSON bravely competed in the howler throw and Long jump following a particularly painful week recovering from a nasty trampolining injury. Talia put on a brave face, battled on and managed her usual excellent job of supporting the team.

Only one meeting remains in the series and the athletes who have attended have all improved significantly. With good performances in the final meeting several of the athletes are in contention for overall prizes, it promises to be an excellent day.

North East Youth Development League-Fixture 2

The second round of the North East Youth Development League took the Alnwick Harriers and Blyth RC team to Monkton Stadium in Jarrow on Sunday 22nd May. The weather was mixed but conditions were generally good and gave the team an ideal opportunity to defend their second place in the league.

The team was once again well supported in the under 13 category and they got off to a good start in the hurdles with the girls filling five out of the six lanes in the first heat. Antje HALL and Milli ELLABY were fastest on the day for Alnwick, both running exactly 15.0s for the 70m course to finish in overall second and third place. Joseph GODDEN was our sole boy competitor but ran the 75m course in a good 16.4s. In the U15 80m hurdles Ollie TELFER completed the race without incident this week managing to push Harry BROWN into second place.

In the 300m sprint Alex THRELFALL won with a time of 49.1s and Owen WILCOX managed third place in 51.9s. In the 100m Harry ELLABY, Milli ELLABY and Eve LEWINGTON all ran good debut races as did Jude HALL in the 200m.

In the middle distance races there were several personal best performances. Lauren BROWN (U13) was runner up in the 1500m with a new club record of 5 mins 29s. In the boys race Joseph GODDEN made good improvement and finished fourth. Ben MURRAY JOHN (U15) stretched teammates Alex and Matthew (Blyth) for the three full laps but unfortunately was out sprinted in the last 20m of their 1500m race, however, all three athletes recorded good times close to 5 minutes 22s. In the 800m Ryan  FRATER-HARRISON (U13) ran under 3 minutes for the first time finishing in 2mins 59, his brother Daniel in the U17 ran a good 2mins 37s. Millie BREESE managed a big personal best of 2mins 55s in the 800m in the girls race.

In the throwing events the team performed well, Ollie and Harry coming first and second again with Ollie managing a personal best throw of 15.12m. Catherine BARNABY and Jack HALL both made their hammer throwing debuts and we hope to see them develop their skills at the next meeting!

Ailsa BATLEY won the U13 girls’ javelin and Antje HALL threw a personal best of 14.98m to come second, the girls maintained their 2nd and 5th place North East rankings. Max BREESE and new harrier Jack HALL managed third and fourth place in the U15’s javelin, Max had a good throw of 21.11. Gregor BATLEY managed a good personal best throw of 18.51m to finish third in the competition and earn himself his first top ten ranking, Jude HALL couldn’t quite match his excellent recent form but still had a good throw of 16.34m.

Talia THOMPSON produced an excellent throw of 6.41m to win the U13’s shot put, this performance currently ranks Talia 6th in the North East of England! Jack HALL proved that the shot was the best of his three throwing events and managed second place with 7.39m.

In the high jump Eve LEWINGTON (U13) did well in her first competition and Lauren BROWN jumped 1.20m to finish third, in the boys event Finlay TELFER jumped a personal best of 1.15m. The U15 boys also finished well with Max BREESE managing second place and Owen WILCOX third.

Finlay TELFER managed another personal best (3.36m) in the long jump, Joseph GODDEN was just 4cm behind him and Ryan FRATER-HARRISON was third of the Alnwick athletes.

The team finally finished in third place less than twenty points behind Gateshead Harriers, however, their performance was good enough to maintain overall second place in the League. Their success has to be attributed to their positive attitude and everyones willingness to try new events and maximise their potential.

The final standings were:

Tynedale:  569

Gateshead:   552

Blyth/Alnwick:  535

Wallsend/Gosforth: 501

Jarrow & Hebburn: 435

South Shields:  195

NECAA Track and Field Championships

Sunday 15th May saw the hosting of the NECAA Track and Field Championship at Gateshead Stadium. It’s the regions biggest such event of the year taking place on Saturday and Sunday involving athletes of all ages.

Ollie TELFER was the first of the Alnwick athletes to compete on Sunday running the 800m in a very strong field of athletes. Ollie who is in his first year of the U15 finished 11th with a personal best time of 2 minutes 31s.

The Championship allows younger athletes, should they wish, to move up an age group to test themselves and try new events. This opportunity enabled Finlay TELFER to take on his brother Ollie in the U15 boys hammer throw. Not having a throwing enclosure in Alnwick meant the two athletes were restricted to practising in big empty fields! However, their improvisation paid off and both won medals, Ollie taking the gold with a throw of 14.94m and Finlay the runner up with 8.46m.

Peter SKIRROW couldn’t match his recent excellent form in the long jump but still managed to win the U20 mens category with a jump of 6.07m. Peter performed better in the mens Javelin competition taking silver medal position with an excellent throw of 34.32m.

Finally Finlay TELFER achieved his second throwing medal of the day in the U13 boys shot put, he finished third with a personal best throw of 5.29m.

The North East Athletic association hosted an excellent event which attracted a record number of athletes. It was well supported and the volunteers and officials who ran the two day Championship did a fantastic job.

North of Tyne Athletic Network Meeting/Northern Track and Field League

A beautiful sunny day gave the Alnwick Junior athletes an excellent opportunity to perform their best at the Churchill Playing Fields, Whitley Bay on Sunday 8th May. The Under 12’s turned out in force and produced some excellent results.

In the middle distance races there were some confident performances, with several of the athletes adopting a more ‘aggressive’ start to their races which produced some positive results. Olivia TEMPLE and Erin BELISLE (Y5) both ran well and finished third and fourth in their 600m race with the same time of 2.21. In the boys year 5 race Billy CLAYTON set off hard, maintained his pace and managed to complete the race in second position with a personal best time of 2.09. The year 4 races were equally competitive with Evie GODDEN and Alfie TEMPLE doing well. Lauren BROWN (Y6) ran a brave race pushing hard right from the start, pacing herself superbly and finishing the last 200m with ‘awe inspiring’ speed. Lauren won the 800m race in a personal best time of 2.37 and set a new club record by over 6 seconds!

The BATLEY brothers lead the charge in the howler throw. Ruaridh won the Y3 boys competition with a throw of over 28m and Gregor managed to break the 35m barrier with his throw winning the Y6 category. There were other excellent performances from Lauren BROWN who won her competition (CR of 28.76) and Talia THOMPSON was runner up with 20.11m. Finlay TELFER was runner up to Gregor and managed a personal best throw of 27.17m.

Erin BELISLE had another excellent result in the 75m sprint finishing in third place. Both Lauren and Billy won their races setting new club record times of 15.2s (100m) and 11.8s for 75m. Euan FRIEND running in his first race this season came third.

Leila THOMPSON (Y3) competed well in the long jump, smiled lots and was certainly the most enthusiastic athlete of the day!

It was a record turn out on Sunday of over 80 athletes for this well organised NOTAN event. The juniors had a superb time, achieved several club records and numerous personal best performances.

NOTAN 2 2016

Slightly further afield in York Peter SKIRROW (U20) was competing for the Alnwick/Blyth team in the Northern Track and Field League. After a ‘difficult’ start in the long jump Peter recovered and went on to win the men’s high jump competition with an impressive personal best jump of 1.88m. Almost immediately afterwards Peter ran a personal best time in the 400m of 53.5s.

North East Youth Development League

The first athletics meeting in the North East Youth Development League took place at the Wentworth Leisure Centre, Hexham on Sunday 1st May. An 18 strong Alnwick group combined with juniors from Blyth Running Club to form an excellent team made up from athletes aged 10 to 16. The Juniors took on clubs from Tynedale, Gateshead, Wallsend, South Shields and Jarrow & Hebburn. It was a cold and windy, but dry day so conditions were better than at other recent competitions.

The team started well with 9 athletes taking part in the various sprint hurdle races. Hurdles, a tough and ‘frightening’ event, often scares away most of the sprinters but the Alnwick athletes having focused heavily on this recently performed well and scored lots of early round points. Only one athlete fell but hurdles veteran Ollie TELFER picked himself up quickly and finished the race along side team mate Harry BROWN. After such a great start Alnwick & Blyth took the lead in the overall competition!

For many of the athletes competing it was their first experience of a track and field competition. The team spirit was fantastic and they all embraced the idea of trying new events. The U15 boys had their first opportunity to participate in the hammer throw, learning how to compete in a throwing cage, and making the most of the basic skills they’d picked up ‘indoors’ at Alnwick. In the other throwing events we were well represented in the U13 category. New Javelin throwers Ryan FRATER-HARRISON and Jude HALL did well and our more experienced throwers Ailsa and Gregor BATLEY had excellent performances. Ailsa won her event with a throw of 16.33m which broke her own club record by 1cm. Max BREESE competed the U15 competition managing a good throw of 22.33m to finish in third place. In the Shot Put Talia THOMPSON and Finlay TELFER put in good performances, whilst Joseph GODDEN who thought he was competing in the long jump turned his hand well to this new event!

The middle distance events are often the toughest for the new athletes to cope with. Racing 800 or 1500m on a track with a large crowd cheering you on can be quite nerve wracking. The runners feel the pressure to race hard from the start but those who hold back a little benefit at the end of the race. Callie (U15) and Ellie HENDERSON (U13) represented the team well, with Callie finishing 3rd in her 1500m race. Both girls ran good races and are sure to achieve even greater success in the future. Joseph GODDEN (U13), Ben MURRAY-JOHN (U15), Ryan(U13) and Daniel FRATER-HARRISON(U17) all ran in the boys races, tried hard showing great determination and added more valuable points to the team score. Lauren BROWN, having forgotten her running spikes, managed another convincing win in the 800m whilst wearing a borrowed pair of shoes that were two sizes too big for her!

The team had lots of sprinters today covering the whole range of distances. Antje HALL won her heat in the 100m after also having a successful hurdles race. Alex THRELFALL (U15) took on the 300m, a tough sprinting race where he finished in second place with a time of 50.7s.

Finally in the jumping events Millie BREESE (U13) bounced back from a recent hurdling injury to compete well in the high jump.

The day is  always concluded with the 4x100m race. Quite often the club struggles to assemble one full team but on this occasion we fielded two U13 girls teams, 2 U13 boys, 1 U15 boys, 1 U15 girls and an U17 boys team! This excellent performance finally secured the Alnwick/Blyth team second place overall. They finished behind Tynedale but ahead of Gateshead Harriers who came third.

The athletes, their parents and the coaches all had a great day and hopefully we’ll have a similar turn out at the next meeting!

Gateshead Open Medal Meeting

Peter SKIRROW (U20) and Finlay TELFER (U13) competed at the Gateshead Open Medal meeting on Sunday 24th April. Another cold competition day didn’t seem as if it would offer the opportunity for personal best performances but both athletes proved us wrong!

Finlay running in his first outdoor hurdles event managed to win a silver medal then went onto win bronze in the shot put.

Peter, however, produced the performance of the day managing a personal best of 6m 57cm in the long jump. He won the U20 event but also had the longest jump of the day by all the athletes, his excellent achievement currently ranks him number one within the North East of England!

Hopefully warmer weather will produce even better performances by both athletes over the coming months.

North of Tyne Athletic Network Meeting-16th April 2016

The outdoor athletics season started on Saturday 16 April and the Alnwick Juniors competing were treated to a dusting of snow on the track at Churchill Playing Fields, Whitley Bay! However they weren’t put off by that or the intermittent showers of hail and had an excellent morning. It was the first time in recent years that Alnwick has had a boy and girl representative in each of the 8 separate categories and it was good to see such enthusiasm.

NOTAN 1 2016

Although very cold the wind did assist the sprinters and Alnwick had good runs from Lauren BROWN (U12) and Billy CLAYTON (U11) who won their races both with new club records. Alfie TEMPLE (U10) ran an excellent first 75m race just being pushed into third place on the line. Fortunately Olivia TEMPLE ran exactly the same time as her brother, 12.6s to avoid a family argument!

In the long jump Finlay TELFER (U12) and Gregor BATLEY took joint first place with jumps of 3.19m, Talia THOMPSON managed third place in the girls event and Lauren was the overall winner.

In the middle distance races Lauren won the combined boys and girls 800m equalling the club record of 2.43. Evie GODDEN (U10) came third in her 600m race with a good time of 2.31.

The wind worked against the throwers on the day but Talia managed third In the howler but the star performance was by Ruaridh BATLEY (U9) who managed the biggest Alnwick throw of the day with a massive 25.8m!

New Harrier Leila THOMPSON, having only completed one training session, managed to perform well in all her events and finished third overall on the day in the Under 9 category!

This was the first of four events in the Grand Prix and all the athletes got off to a good start. Hopefully at the next one in May the weather will be a bit more forgiving.

North East Indoor Pentathlon Championships 2016

Multi event competitions are demanding on ordinary days but this year the North East Pentathlon Championship followed the last cross country event of the season. This didn’t deter Alnwick athletes Ollie TELFER and Lauren BROWN who were both competing for the first time at under 15 and under 13 level.

There was no sign of tired legs in the first round of competition. Lauren, in her first 60m hurdle race, ran an indoor club record time of 12.43s and Ollie, in the U15 boys race, ran a personal best time of 11.80s. The second round proved to the athletes how difficult pentathlon can be and how disappointing it is at times. Unfortunately in the shot put, an event that Lauren has previously done will in, she had 3 no throws which scored her no points for that round. Ollie had an unsuccessful and difficult long jump which saw him slip to 5th place in the Championship contest.

Most encouragingly Lauren picked herself up and responded with an excellent performance in the high jump managing a new personal best of 1.20m and improving on her own indoor club record. Ollie had a massive personal best throw in the shot put (6.72m) clawing himself back up the leader board by one place.

In the fourth round there was a solid performance by Lauren in the long jump of 3.26m and Ollie had another excellent round managing another personal best with a jump of 1.35m in the high jump. This enabled him to move up another place and put him into third place medal position before the final round.

The day was finished off with the 60m sprint, with Lauren going first running an excellent time of 9.44s. Going into the last round of the boys event there was only 90 points separating 3rd, 4th and 5th places. As this only equates to 0.4s in the scoring of the sprint race everything was to play for. The three athletes challenging for the third place position were in the same heat and all ran well. However on the day Matty WALKER of New Marske Harriers was the quickest and narrowly pushed Daniel BRAZUKAS and Ollie into 4th and 5th places.

The North East Counties Athletic Association once again hosted an excellent event. It was a tough day and it certainly had its ups and downs! But the two athletes showed their strengths, battled on, achieved several personal bests each and Lauren established three new club records. They were a credit to the club and proved to themselves the importance of keeping going and battling on when things aren’t necessarily going too well!

Inter Counties Sports Hall Competition

Twenty one Alnwick Harrier Juniors represented Northumberland on Saturday 12th March in the Inter Counties Sports Hall competition at Temple Park, South Shields. In a range of ‘fun’ track and field events the athletes competed against teams from Tyne & Wear and Durham to try to qualify for a place in the national final.

The Club members ranged in age from U11 to U15 and competed in sprint & middle distance relays, hurdle and ‘obstacle’ races, long jump and triple jump as well as a range of speed, strength and agility tests. It’s the first year Northumberland has competed in this competition and they certainly rose to the challenge. The athletes worked well alongside their team mates from Blyth Running Club and Tynedale Harriers, and finished third overall in the competition.

The athletes and coaches are already looking forward to next year and hope to build on this new experience.

Gateshead Indoor Standards Meeting

The Gateshead Indoor meeting attracted a strong field on 11th February. In addition to the regular Alnwick athletes, World Indoor 60m Champion Richard KILTY and Team GB international long jumper Chris TOMLINSON were also competing!

Max BREESE (U15) was first to compete alongside the Champions and ran close to a personal best time (9.7s) in the 60m. However, KILTY looked impressive and was fastest overall on the night completing the sprint in 6.59s!

Finlay TELFER continued his unbeaten season in the 60m hurdles and brother Ollie managed second place in the U15 race.

In the long jump Max managed a personal best of 3.85m and Ollie TELFER was just one place ahead of him with a jump of 4.01m. Finlay TELFER (U13) managed third in his category with a jump of 3.07m and enjoyed lining up against TOMLINSON who won the senior event with a massive 7.52m!

Finally Millie BREESE (U13) was Alnwicks highest placed athlete of the evening jumping a personal best of 1.15m equalling the club indoor record to secure herself joint first place in the high jump!

It was a great evening of athletics and an excellent opportunity for the young athletes to experience some top class competition.

North East Junior Track and Field Championships

The North East Track and Field Indoor Championships were held at Gateshead this weekend, with three Alnwick Juniors competed on the first day in the field events.

The day got off to a good start with Lauren BROWN and Finlay TELFER both doing well to finish as runners up in their high jump competitions. In his first triple jump event Ollie TELFER competed well and narrowly missed a new club record by 1cm! He was also denied a medal after tying for third place with a jump of 8.95m because his second best jump was shorter than his rivals. However he was happy enough with fourth place and vowed to do better next time!

Lauren improved her personal best by a massive 30cm in the long jump to win the girls event and set a new club record of 3.52m. Lauren had a successful day also establishing new club records in the Shot Put and high jump.

The three athletes produced some great performances, enjoyed competing in the warm indoor environment and had a great day out!

Gateshead Indoor Series

The Gateshead Indoor Athletic Series continued last Thursday with its 3rd round being well attended. Four Junior Harriers competed in the 60m sprint, hurdles, high jump and shot put.

The Alnwick athletes attending have all just moved up age categories so individual victories were unlikely but there was plenty of opportunity to work on personal best performances in the perfect indoor environment.

In the high jump both Finlay TELFER and Millie BREESE managed personal best performances jumping 1.10m and 1.05m. In the 60m hurdles all the athletes ran well and nobody fell over!

Ollie TELFER managed a personal best throw of 6.08m in the shot put and Millie BREESE managed a personal best time of 10.12s in the 60m sprint. Max BREESE jumped the highest of the Alnwick athletes and finished second in the high jump competition.

It was an excellent evening of athletics and the juniors had a great time. The competition was good practise for the forthcoming North East Indoor Championships which are to be held this weekend. The athletes hope to continue their success and will no doubt try their hardest to improve on their performances.

Minors Cross Country Championships, Jarrow

Hundreds of junior runners competed on Saturday 3rd October in the Minors North East Cross Country Championship at Bedewell Park,  Jarrow. The competitors from school years 4 to 6 were treated to good conditions and competed in races ranging in distance from 1 to 3km.

This was a team competition where every runners finishing position helped contribute to the clubs final score. Alnwick fielded 12 fantastic juniors of varying age and experience.

Minors xc 2015 group

Although we didn’t have quite enough athletes to fill every team and contest the overall prize there were some excellent individual performances. Chloe GIVENS, Olivia TEMPLE and Madeleine AINSWORTH ran well in their debut races finishing high in the overall field. In the Year 6 race the boys ran well together giving each other plenty of support and finishing as a close group.

The Year 6 girls once again contested the most fiercely competitive race! Millie BREESE lead the initial charge from the start line and it was not long before Lauren BROWN moved up to  the front of the field to set a fast pace for the leading pack. In a re-run of last weeks Harrier League fixture Lauren managed to turn the table on her rivals from Birtley and Chester le Street AC to win the  race with a strong finish!

Amongst the rest of the team there were some great personal performances with all the competitors giving their best and enjoying their day!

Thanks to all the competitors for trying so hard and thank you to all their friends and family who supported them so well!

Results to follow……………………………………… (probably on Start Fitness Harrier League Facebook page).

North Eastern Grand Prix 2015

On Monday evening athletes from across the North East gathered at Gateshead Stadium for the annual presentation of the Start Fitness awards. Steve Cram presented the trophies for the North Eastern Counties Athletics Grand Prix which had been held on 6 evenings over the summer. Athletes entered up to 3 events at each meeting and accumulated points depending on how highly they placed.

Alnwick Harriers Max BREESE and Ollie TELFER represented their club in a range of events including high jump, long jump, hurdles, javelin, shot put, sprints and middle distance races! Their diversity and enthusiasm were rewarded and the boys won trophies for first and second place!

NEHL Tanfield

A quality field of Alnwick Juniors turned out at Tanfield for the first cross country fixture of the season. It was encouraging to see the smiling faces of both new and experienced runners. Making their Alnwick Harrier cross country debuts were Max and Ben MURRAY- JOHN, Maddy HALL, Robert STEPHENSON and Ryan HARRISON-FRATER. They all performed brilliantly, handled the racing in the right spirit and hopefully will return to represent their teams again!

The U11 boys were first off and the spectators gathered in their dozens to see how deep the river crossing really was! Both Finlay TELFER and Max MURRAY-JOHN made it look easy and the onlookers looked slightly relieved! The girls were next up and Millie BREESE and Lauren BROWN both ran strongly and their confidence to push hard from the beginning earned them excellent finishing positions. Millie crossed the line in an excellent eighth place and Lauren won the third place medal!

Maddy HALL was the clubs sole representative in the U13 girls category but she coped well on her debut and ran a good time. The boys had a full team represented by Ben MURRAY-JOHN, Owen DOUGLAS, Max BREESE and Ollie TELFER.

In the U15 race Callie HENDERSON ran strongly from the start and maintained her second place throughout the entire race to win a medal. Sophie ENSER showed lots of improvement on last year and clearly has been training hard over the summer!

The U15 boys also fielded a strong team. Harrison BROWN who has just moved up an age category ran a great race to finish in 16th place. Daniel HARRISON-FRATER and Robert STEPHENSON weren’t far behind contributing to a good team score for the club.

The day was concluded with excellent performances from both Jenny BOLAM and Ben KELLY in the U17 age group.

The Juniors had a good day, enjoyed the favourable weather and represented their club well. Hopefully we’ll see them all again next time!

North Eastern Counties AA Open Pentathlon

Perfect weather created excellent conditions for the athletes at the North East Open Pentathlon meeting at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow on Saturday 19th September. Athletes from across northern England assembled for this last athletic meeting of the season and the excellent turnout created some fierce competition with excellent performances.

Ollie TELFER represented Alnwick Harriers in the 5 disciplines competing in the under 13 age category. Ollie started well winning his heat in the 75m hurdles with a personal best time of 14.9s (G4). His Long Jump of 3.89m only achieved him 4th place, but a personal best of 1.25m in the High Jump moved him back up to 3rd place. Another solid performance in the shot put maintained his overall 3rd place position going into the last event. Ollie led the 800m race from the start setting a strong solid pace, but unfortunately he was out sprinted in the final 100m to be narrowly beaten into 2nd place. However, his efforts were rewarded with a personal best time of 2min 34s (G4).

Ollie was 2nd placed north east athlete and finished 3rd overall in the Open Championship behind Jamie HOPKINS of Southport Waterloo AC (Liverpool) and Josh McKEOWN of Gateshead Harriers. His excellent personal best performance scored him 1282 points, a new club record!

Tartan Games

On Sunday 30th August a record number of competitors turned out at Gateshead Stadium and were treated to great weather for the annual Tartan Games. Alnwick had four athletes competing in a range of events and age categories.

The U13 boys were first to compete. Finlay TELFER was able to step up an age category to give him the opportunity to challenge his brother Ollie. Both boys jumped well with Finlay managing 3.16m to finish 12th out of the 16 athletes and brother Ollie jumped 3.79m to finish 5th.

Peter SKIRROW (U20) contested both the long and triple jump events. Peter who is relatively new to triple jumping managed a personal best of 12.22m to win his competition and in the long jump he was runner up with 5.76m!

On the track Lauren BROWN won her heat in the U11’s 60m in 9.66s to finish 4th overall. Ollie TELFER narrowly missed out on 1st place in the 75m hurdles, a photo finish was required to separate the 1st and 2nd placed runners by just 100th of a second!

There were strong fields of runners in the middle distance races. Ollie managed a 7 second personal best run in the 800m and finished 6th in 2min 35s. Lauren BROWN ran well and finished strongly but could only manage 4th place today.

The 4 athletes competed well and enjoyed a well organised day.

North East Youth Development League, Monkton Stadium

Sunday 19th July saw the final round of the North East Youth Development League at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow. The combined team of Alnwick and Blyth were aiming to defend their third place position in the league.

Holidays and injuries unfortunately reduced the number of Alnwick athletes to 6 but they were well prepared and keen to score in as many events as they could.

Ollie TELFER (U13) and Jess BARNABY (U17) both managed second place in the opening track events; the 75 and 80m hurdles. More success followed quickly with Max BREESE (U13) winning the high jump with a leap of 1.20m

On the track Ciara HEELEY represented the under fifteen girls well in the 800m and Ollie TELFER ran a personal best time of 5min 23s in the 1500m.

The throwing events produced Alnwicks best results. In the Shot Put Catherine BARNABY (U13) threw well and sister Jess was runner up in the U17 women’s competition. In the javelin Max BREESE was brilliant, throwing an excellent personal best of 21.85m to manage second place in his category. However, the performance of the day was by Ailsa BATLEY who won the girls competition with a throw of 16.32m ranking her fifth in the north east of England!

The combined team of Alnwick and Blyth finally finished in third place in the league behind North Shields Poly and Houghton beating Birtley AC, South Shields and Jarrow & Hebburn! An excellent result that was achieved by the dedication of a committed core of athletes, their parents and some excellent coaches! Well done everyone who took part it was a great summer season.

A few miles to east Lauren BROWN was competing at Gateshead Stadium in the ‘Minors’ League. In the howler throw Lauren threw an excellent 25.66m but the most competitive event was the 600m. Although Lauren managed to equal her own excellent club record time of 1 min 56s it was only enough to give her the bronze medal. There is however, one meeting still left in the series so there may be a chance for further improvement!

4th NOTAN Grand Prix Fixture

It was the fourth and final NOTAN Grand Prix meeting at Churchill Fields on Saturday 4th July and the Juniors arrived at Whitley Bay facing miserably wet conditions. However, this did not deter their enthusiasm for the events they competed in during the morning.

The day got off to a flying start with Finlay TELFER (Y5) jumping 3.37m to take 1st place.

The Howler throw was dominated by Alnwick with Alisa BATLEY (Y6) taking 2nd position with a throw of 25.05m and brother Ruaridh (Y3) throwing a solid 24.96m to take 1st place. Meanwhile the year 5 category saw Gregor BATLEY and Finlay TELFER taking 1st and 2nd places and Millie BREESE throwing a PB of 20.5m which placed her second on the day.

Sisters Talia (Y5) and Leila (Y3) Thompson continued to improve in all their events they competed in during the morning and put in solid performances.

On the track saw Lauren BROWN (Y5) take first place in both the 75m sprint and the 600m where she set a PB and new club record of 1.56!

The overall points from the series resulted in medals being awarded to Year 5 athletes.  In the boys, Finlay TELFER took home Silver and saw Gregor BATLEY take Bronze. Lauren Brown took Gold medal position and was also awarded the overall girls medal for achieving the most points throughout the Grand Prix.

Well done to all the athletes that competed this season, they all did fantastic and they all enjoyed the events. A special thank you to their parents for supporting them and also to NOTAN for once again organising such a well organised and enjoyable series.

Weekend Roundup 27/28 June

The Junior Harriers have had another very busy weekend! On Saturday 27th June it the was the Schools County Championship (years 6-8) at Gateshead Stadium, whilst the following day saw the third round of the North East Youth Development League at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow.

Thirteen Harriers from four of our middle schools represented North Northumberland in the Championship. The north stand at Gateshead Stadium was full and a hot sunny day generated an excellent atmosphere with some great results. Although the team finished fourth out of the five districts there were excellent performances by all the team members.

Sunday produced another exciting day. Most had competed the day before and some had just returned from trekking around Northumberland for their Duke of Edinburgh Award! However it didn’t deter the ten enthusiastic team members who all embraced the challenge of maintaining our third place in the league.

The team produced too many individual victories, personal bests, national rankings and graded performances too count. However two athletes performances cannot go unmentioned. Catherine BARNABY managed a massive personal best throw in the Shot Put to finish third and Claire ROBSON delighted the crowd and judges with her celebration when clearing 1.30m in the high jump. Both girls enthusiasm summed up the spirit displayed by the whole team on the day and contributed towards their success in maintaining our third place position in the league.

Gateshead Young Athletes Meeting

It was the second Young Athletes Meeting at Gateshead Stadium on Sunday 14 June. Lauren BROWN was Alnwick’s only athlete participating but she performed well and improved on her success of the last meeting back in April. Lauren started well throwing the Howler 25.80m to establish a new club record and to win the silver medal. In the standing Long Jump she managed a personal best of 1.84cm and equalled her personal best time of 1:59 in the 600m to gain a silver medal in both events.

Lauren has continued to improve in both her track and field events. Her consistent approach and enthusiasm in training have contributed to her success and significant development.

North of Tyne Athletic Meeting, Whitley Bay

At the third NOTAN Grand Prix meeting on Sunday 7th June the Juniors finally got a warm if not windy day. Conditions weren’t great for personal bests but spirits were high and there were some great performances.

The BATLEY family once again dominated the Howler throwing, Ruaridh, the latest member of the family to turn his hand to throwing convincingly won the Year 3 competition with a throw of 25.55m. Although sister Ailsa won the Y6 girls competition with a new club record of 26.60m it was brother Gregor who threw furthest in the family with 29.32m to secure himself second place in the Y5 competition.

In the long jump Finlay TELFER managed the biggest Alnwick jump of the day (3.18m) to win the Y5 boys category, however, he only narrowly beat best friend Gregor by 1cm. Millie BREESE (Y5) managed third place overall with 3.07m, however, Talia THOMPSON made the biggest improvement of the day managing to jump nearly 40cm further than the last competition.

On the track Lauren BROWN coped well with the windy conditions in the 600m to be narrowly beaten into second place by just 1s in a time of exactly 2 minutes. Billy CLAYTON improved his run by almost 40s to 2:09 to put him in third place overall.

However, Leila THOMPSON who had only turned up to support her sister won the prize for being the most enthusiastic athlete in the Alnwick camp. Leila entered the Y3 category and performed magnificently having never tried the events before let alone competing against others!

Next month sees the last meeting in the series where the athletes will be competing for their final position in the overall Grand Prix standings.

North East Counties AA Track and Field Championships

On the 23rd and 24th of May it was NECAA Track and Field Championships at Gateshead International Stadium, with athletes from all age categories competing in events over the course of the weekend. Alnwick Harriers had 2 representatives on the first day. Max BREESE and Ollie TELFER (U13) both ran in the 75m hurdles facing their toughest competition so far this season. They both ran well and Ollie managed an excellent personal best time of 15.12s to win the silver medal.

Max competed next in the 1500m and Ollie the High Jump where he again won the silver medal. The boys finally finished their day with the 100m sprint.

On Sunday Peter SKIRROW (U20)  took part in the Long Jump and managed a massive personal best of 5.85m to win the silver medal, narrowly missing gold by just one centimetre! Ollie meanwhile managed bronze medal in the Shot Put (6.46m), silver medal in the Long Jump (4.03m) and ran a good race in the 800m.

It was an excellent weekend of athletics with great weather that helped contribute to some excellent performances.

North East Youth Development League-Fixture 2

Sunday 17th May saw the hosting of the 2nd Youth Development League match at Churchill Playing Fields, Whitley Bay. Following a fantastic 3rd place at the first meeting last month the Junior Harriers had a tough target to beat. Although slightly down on numbers than in April the 12 athletes once again showed their versatility and scored some good points alongside their team mates from Blyth RC.

The team proved to be particularly strong in the throwing events on this very windy day. Ailsa BATLEY (U13) competing in her first javelin competition won convincingly. Ailsa set a new club record of 14.92m and earned herself a UK ranking currently placing her in third place within the North East of England. Harry BROWN and Ciara HEELEY both competed in the U15 discus, with Ciara winning the girls category with a personal best throw of 14.02m. Josh and Luke McMEEKING turned their skills to where their team needed them most and managed 2nd and 3rd places in their debut U15 Shot Put competition! Ollie TELFER and Max BREESE both were runners up in the U13 Shot and Javelin; Max’s 20.31m throw also earned him a UK ranking.

Owen WILCOX took second place in the U15 High jump with a personal best of 1.21m. Palesa THOMPSON managed a great jump of 1.30m to take second place and Clare ROBSON who competed alongside her managed 1.15m. In the Long Jump Ollie TELFER won with a good jump of 4.11m gaining another UK ranking, and in the U15 event Sophie ENSER also managed a personal best. The McMEEKING’s returned for a rematch in the Long jump this week with Luke this time taking the honours beating his brother Josh by 30cm!!

On the track Harry BROWN was our only 1500m runner recording a personal best of 5.33. In the 800m Owen WILLCOX and Ciara HEALY both ran well for the U15’s. Ollie TELFER and Max BREESE again continued their success in the 75m hurdles taking first and second place and Katie HILTON was third in the U15 girl’s race. The U15 girls represented us well in the sprints Clare, Palesa, Katie, Ciara and Sophie ran in the 100,200 and 300m as well as forming a relay team at the end of the day. The U13 boys also managed to form a 4x100m team to round off an excellent day.

Although the club fielded fewer athletes this month they competed well and achieved a good result, finally finishing in third place again but halving the gap on their nearest rivals North Shields Poly.

North of Tyne Athletic Meeting 2-Churchill Fields, Whitley Bay

Sunday 10th May saw the second ‘minors’ Grand Prix meeting take place, hosted by the North of Tyne Athletics Network at Churchill Fields, Whitley Bay. The 6 Alnwick athletes comprised of three boys and three girls all from school years 4 and 5. Billy CLAYTON (8) was attending his first event and competed well on his debut. He ran a fantastic 600m race, resisting the temptation to set off too quickly then finishing strongly over the last 200m overtaking half the field to finish in second place! He then managed a big throw (23.28m) in the Howler competition to finish second again. Cameron CULLEN competed alongside Billy and managed a huge 25s personal best in the 600m, showing what improvement a bit of practice can make!

The year five girls represented the club well Millie BREESE was runner up in  the long jump (2.88m), and Lauren BROWN won both the 600m (2:02) and the Howler with a personal best throw of 24.36m. Talia THOMSON competed in her first outdoor competition giving good performances in all her events.

Finlay TELFER was the only year five boy from Alnwick this week but performed well in all four events managing a personal best throw of 24.72m in the Howler to give him second place. This solid performance built well on last month’s success and now places him in second place in the Grand Prix standings.

There are two meetings left in series and all the athletes are in a good position to finish well in the overall standings.

North East Youth Development League-Churchill Fields, Whitley Bay

17 Junior Harriers combined forces with Blyth Running Club on Sunday 26th April to form a team in the North East Youth Development League. This athletics match requires each team to field competitors from every age group in a broad spectrum of both track and field events. Teams can enter two athletes in every event to score points and contribute to an overall score. Success in the competition does not only rely on outstanding performances but having enough versatile athletes who can compete in a range of events. Alnwick and Blyth were both well represented and we had our first opportunity in recent years to finish high in the league table.

For the U13 girls Catherine BARNABY threw a personal best in Shot Put (3.68m) and both she and Emma JACKSON competed well in the Long Jump. Both girls then went on to compete in the sprints to finish a successful day. In the boys category Benji GILLINGHAM won the High Jump, Ollie TELFER won the 75m Hurdles and Long Jump where Max BREESE also performed well jumping a personal best of 3.48m! At the end of the day the boys formed a relay team and managed a second placed finish in the 4 x100m, giving us some valuable final points.

The U15’s turned out in force today with many new faces and some of the more regular athletes trying new events to maximise the team score. Mark ROBERTS jumped a High Jump best of 1.25m and then ran the 1500m alongside Harry BROWN. Harry went on to make a debut in the Discus throwing well and scoring more valuable points. Josh & Luke McMEEKING competed well against each other in both the 100m and long jump, Luke fared slightly better possibly due to Josh’s earlier efforts in the 800m but then went on to complete the 200m as his last event. Owen WILCOX also competed for the first time in the 800m, High Jump and Long Jump performing well and setting some good targets to beat next time.

Claire ROBSON (U15) jumped well in a hotly contested High Jump competition, matching her PB, then earned further points in the Javelin. Ella HEMSLEY (U15) turned up thinking she was entering the 200m but ‘volunteered’ to fill in some gaps in the team and ran the 1500m followed by the Shot Put, an excellent contribution! Ciara HEELEY ran a good personal best of 2.53.1 in the 800m, a strong 200m then the Discus. Catherine JACKSON also represented the team in the Javelin, then she and Sophie ENSER both entered the Long Jump and the 100m. The U15 girls concluded an excellent day by finishing second in the 4x100m relay.

Ben KELLY was our only U17 man but ran well in the 1500m, he set and maintained a fast even pace and lead the race until the last lap. He lost out on this occasion to a more experienced athlete but we’re sure he’ll better this excellent second place achievement (4.44.5) in the future. Jessica BARNABY competed in a range of events in the women’s U17 category. Jess started the day well winning the 80m Hurdles, followed by a solid Long Jump performance and finally surprising everyone with her debut victory in the Shot Put!

The team finished in an excellent third place behind North Shields Poly and Houghton.   Their success can be attributed to a willingness to participate and the enthusiasm to try new events. The team worked well and supported each other admirably; hopefully we will continue so well and attract more athletes to the next event in May.

Junior Roundup 18-19 April 2015

It was a busy weekend for the Junior Harriers; the first North Of Tyne Athletic Network Grand Prix (under 12’s) took place at Whitley Bay on Saturday and the first Gateshead Grand Prix was on Sunday. The ‘Open Meeting’ for all age groups followed the under 12’s event on the Sunday afternoon!

Five athletes took part in Saturday’s event at the Churchill Fields track. Cameron CULLEN (9) represented Alnwick in his first competition and did well to finish second in the 75m sprint. All the events were new to Cameron and he impressed everyone with how he grew in confidence throughout the morning.

Finlay TELFER and Gregor BATLEY (10) were closely matched in speed and strength as well as raw enthusiasm! They were 2nd and 3rd in the long jump, 2nd and 1st in the howler throw, 2nd and 3rd in the 600m and 4th and 2nd in the 75m sprint. Well done boys!

Ailsa BATLEY was the only Year 6 representative but competed well in the largest field of athletes and did well to finish second in the howler throw.

Lauren BROWN performed excellently in the Y5 girls event winning the 600m and the long jump with a new U11 club record of 3.29m. Lauren improved on her own club record to finish third in the 75m sprint in 11.9’s, these excellent results scored her the highest overall points in both the boys and girls categories.

NOTAN 1 2015

On Sunday Lauren travelled to Gateshead to compete in the first of their four Grand Prix meetings. On a much colder, windy morning Lauren was still keen to participate and managed some more excellent results. Personal best performances in the Long Jump and Howler throw earned her bronze and silver medals, she gained another bronze in the 75m sprint but saved her best performance to last! Amongst a fast large field of competitors in the 600m Lauren maintained second place for the first 500m of the race, coming off the last bend Lauren had an impossible 25m gap to close on the first place athlete. However, she tried and with staggering acceleration almost won the race missing out on the gold medal by half a second. Lauren’s time of 1minute 59s broke her own club record (again!).

Later in the day Oliver TELFER was the only athlete to represent Alnwick in the open competition. Ollie (U13) achieved three personal best ‘outdoor’ performances in unfavourably cold conditions, his long jump of 3.89m earned him a silver medal and he won the Shot Putt with a throw of 6.37m. However, he showed his biggest improvement in hurdling and won the silver medal in the 75m race in 15.86s. This time gives him his first UK hurdling ranking and places him second fastest within the north east of England!

It was a great weekend of track and field athletics which rewarded the participants for all their hard training put in over the winter months, an excellent start to the season!

The Anne Marie Readshaw Memorial Open Track & Field Meeting

The ‘summer’ track and field season has started and a dozen enthusiastic juniors travelled to Shildon for the first outdoor athletics meeting of the season.

It was horrendous! Fortunately as the weather was so bad the juniors did see the funny side. It was generally accepted by the officials present that no worse conditions have been encountered in living memory!

To add some variety to the day the rain did occasionally change from ‘heavy’ to ‘torrential’ then back again!

Our athletes battled through it and they all now can say they were at Shildon in 2015! They won a fair collection of medals between them and established a couple of new club records. However, the day will not be remembered for individual performances but for overwhelming resilience, good spirit, team work and friendly camaraderie.

Thank you to the athletes, parents and coaches who turned out and represented the Club so well.

NECAA Indoor Pentathlon Championships

Athletes from the North East, Yorkshire, Cumbria and Scotland competed at Gateshead Academy for Sport over the weekend of 21st March in the North East Indoor Pentathlon Championship. Ollie TELFER represented Alnwick in the Under 13 category in his first indoor competition.

Ollie ran personal best times in the 60m hurdles and 60m sprint and managed decent results in the long and high jumps. His best event was the Shot Putt where he managed to throw a personal best  of 6.72m to secure a new club record and achieve a national ranking.

Ollie was crowned North East Champion with a score of 1005  points! He also gained some excellent experience which will stand him in good stead for the forthcoming track and field season.

Results: 60m Hurdles  12.16s, Shot 6.72m, Long Jump 3.77m, High Jump 1.16m, 60m Sprint 9.66s.

Mini Athletics Series-Sunday 22nd February

On Sunday 22nd February 4 Junior Alnwick Harriers travelled to Gateshead to compete in the second fixture of the ‘mini athletics series’ held at the Academy of Sport, Gateshead College. The event was a very well organised competition, inviting children from across the region to compete in hurdles, sprints, long jump, high jump and shot put.

The day got off to a flying start with Max BREESE achieving gold in the 60m hurdles.  Meanwhile competing in the Year 5 standing long jump Lauren BROWN took the silver medal position with a distance of 1.74m and Millie BREESE just missed out on a medal to finish fourth with a distance of 1.64m.

Max’s hard work paid off to see him take home gold in all other events he competed in on the day.

The 60m sprint was the second event the Year 5 girls took part in, which saw Lauren finishing third.

Alnwick performed brilliantly in the final event of shot put with Lauren taking the Gold, Talia THOMPSON taking bronze and Millie finishing a close fourth position.

North East Counties Athletics Association Indoor Championships 2015

NECAA hosted the regions track and field championships at Gateshead College Academy for Sport over the weekend of 14/15th February. Field events took place at the indoor venue on Saturday followed by track events on Sunday.

On Saturday three Alnwick Junior boys represented the club in the under 13 category and competed in the High Jump, Long jump and Shot Put. The day started well with all the boys clearing 1.20m. Max BREESE took the Silver medal, Ollie TELFER the bronze and Benji GILLINGHAM finished fourth. When all athletes clear the same height medal positions are determined by ‘count back’ where those who clear the final height with the least attempts receive the highest award. Both Max and Benji achieved personal best jumps; it was a very close competition!!

Positions were reversed in the long jump with Max winning the bronze medal and Ollie jumping a 3.90m personal best to take silver. After an unfortunate injury Benji once again finished fourth.

Only Ollie competed in the Shot Put which was the final event of the day. He was runner up with a personal best throw of 6.25m!

Max was the only athlete to return on Sunday for the track events. He built on last season’s hurdling success to win the silver medal in the 60m. Later in the day he ran a personal best time in the 60m sprint to finish fourth in his heat.

The athletes had a great weekend competing at an exceptionally well organised event. The opportunity to compete indoors so early in the year will be a great help in achieving success as the season continues.

Northern Schools Inter Counties Cross Country Championships

Six Alnwick Harrier Juniors represented Northumberland in the Inter County Schools Cross Country Championship at Temple Park, South Shields at the weekend. To represent the county against North Yorkshire, Cumbria, Cleveland and Durham they had to qualify through the area and county championships at Druridge Bay then Temple Park.

The senior girls produced the best results of the day with Suzie BARWISE-MUNRO and Rosie MURTON finishing 2nd and 6th. Callie HENDERSON, as a ‘young’ junior, ran well to come in 14th position in her race.

The boys also fielded three runners Daniel LENG managed 45th in the senior boys and Ben KELLY 25th in the ‘inter’ boys. Finally Ollie TELFER our only ‘minor’ runner managed 56th over his 2.6km course.

Teams of eight athletes are selected to represent Northumberland at the National Championship next month and hopefully several of our runners will get places!

On Remembrance Sunday 5 Alnwick Harrier Juniors competed in the annual Memorial Races on the Town Moor in Newcastle.

Finlay TELFER (9) and Lauren BROWN (9) represented the club in the U11’s race over 1.1km. An incredibly fast race started furiously and didn’t slow down! Lauren ran well and produced even more speed over the last 300m to secure the second place trophy in the girls’ category.

The U13’s ran a 3km race, over 50 competitors battled hard on the fast flat course to produce some excellent times. Both Ollie TELFER and Harry BROWN ran personal best times of close to 12 minutes amongst a strong field of runners from across the North East.

Heaton Harriers once again ran an excellent well organised event where all age groups could compete.

Junior Sports Report-30th October 2014

There were some positive results for the Alnwick Harriers who travelled to Gateshead on Thursday 30th October evening to compete in the first fixture of the Gateshead College Indoor Athletics Series.

In the first track event, the 60M hurdles, U13 Max BREESE’s recent hurdle work paid off, when Max had a good clean run through the hurdles to take second. There were also solid performances in the hurdles from U15s Cora DRUMMOND and Jade CRADDOCK, who finished third and fourth respectively.

Max then went on to finish fourth in the Long Jump. U15 Katie HILTON set a new club record in the Long Jump, leaping 3.95M to finish third. Also competing in the long jump, Cora’s jump of 3.22M was sufficient for fifth.

Meanwhile, competing in the U15 Shot putt Jade had a good round of throws, with a best of 5.73M to finish sixth.

The climax of the evening was the 60M sprint where the quartet of Harriers acquitted themselves particularly well. The most notable performance came from Katie HILTON who won her heat and smashed Alnwick Harriers U15 60M sprint record with an outstanding time of 8.86 seconds, just 0.06 seconds off an AAA Standard!

The next competition is on Thursday 20th November and is for age groups U15 and over.

Alnwick Harriers at Gateshead Indoor Series Oct 2014

Mini Athletics Series-Gateshead College

On Sunday 12th October 5 Alnwick Harrier Juniors attended the first of the events in the winter ‘mini athletic series’ at the Academy for Sport, Gateshead College. This indoor event attracted children from schools and clubs across the region and they were able to participate in sprints, hurdles, long and high jump and shot put. The competition was run very informally and was an excellent opportunity for new athletes to experience events they might not have tried before. The officials and coaches were able to offer excellent advice and encouragement and everyone enjoyed their day.

The Alnwick athletes did very well winning medals in most of the categories. Talia THOMPSON (9) competed in her first shot put competition, performed brilliantly and won the silver medal!

In conjunction with the College, Gateshead Harriers will be running the next event on 22nd February. It’s a great opportunity to get some excellent experience and training over the winter in a pleasant, warm environment!

Minors Cross Country Championships, Jarrow

300 junior runners competed on Saturday 4th October in the Minors North East Cross Country running championship at Bedewell Park, Jarrow. The competitors from school years 4 to 6 enthusiastically battled the wet and windy conditions in races ranging in distance from 1 to 3km.

This was a team competition where every runners finishing position helped contribute towards the clubs final score. Alnwick Harriers fielded 23 fantastic Juniors who represented the club across the six categories.

Junior Sports Report-27th September 2014

The TELFER family managed to persuade one more Harrier to join them on their annual pilgrimage to the Upper Redesdale Show at Rochester on Saturday 27th September. It was a worthwhile journey for Lauren BROWN (9) who comfortably won the Under 13’s fell race over the tough, hilly one mile course. Finishing not too far behind her was Finlay TELFER (9) who ran a steady well paced race to win the boys category.

Ollie TELFER fancied his chances in the longer even hillier race so moved up an age category and finished first in the ‘Youth’ race (U16)! This race was a shortened version of the ‘Seniors’ course but with a tough one mile climb followed by a tougher descent proved testing for all the competitors!

Mike TELFER didn’t quite match the excellent achievement of the juniors but managed second place in the senior race. However, the most credit has to be given to the race winner Kenny WHITEFORD from Peebles who cycled home after the prize giving!

The ‘Rochester Show’ is an excellent village show that has maintained its traditions and is great fun. Hopefully we can encourage a few more competitors to participate next year!

North East Pentathlon Championships

Ollie TELFER (11) competed for Alnwick Harriers in his first Pentathlon at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow on Saturday 13th September where a fantastic sunny day helped him achieve several personal best performances and created an exciting close competition.

The day started well with a good performance in the event with which he has least experience, the 75m hurdles. Ollie managed 5th place and ran a personal best time of 17.00s. Next event of the five was the long jump where another personal best of 3.74m gained him third place. Ollie’s high jump ‘went a bit wrong’ and joint fourth place still left him in overall fifth place in the competition. However, a reasonable third place shot putt of 5.55m got him up to overall fourth place before the final event.

Going into the last event only 75 points separated the five competitors placed from second to sixth place. Everything was to play for in the 800m and all the athletes knew with a good performance they could secure a medal. The pace was ‘furious’ for the first lap but Ollie paced himself well and let the others surge ahead. With 300m to go he maintained his pace and moved from sixth up to fourth position, a final surge down the home straight allowed him to out sprint another athlete to come home third in a massive personal best time of 2 minutes 44s!

Unfortunately Ollie’s superb final performance wasn’t quite fast enough to secure him the overall bronze medal; he missed it by the narrow margin of 8 points with a final score of 877. However, he had a great day and is already planning how he’s going to score more points next year!

Gateshead Minors Meeting 10th August 2014

Lauren BROWN (9) was Alnwick’s sole representative at the last Minors (U12) athletic meeting at Gateshead Stadium on Sunday 10th August. Even though she’d missed one of the five competitions Lauren had scored highly enough on previous occasions to earn herself a fifth place trophy in the overall grand prix series. A very impressive achievement!

On Sunday Lauren ran 400m in 1 min 18s to win the bronze medal, she finished fourth in the howler throw (19.45m) and delivered good performances in the 75m sprint and long jump. Lauren has improved steadily throughout the summer season and practised hard. She’s made great progress in the more technical events and proved how practise pays off! The broad range of events Lauren has competed in will stand her in good stead for the forthcoming cross country season which she is looking forward to with enthusiasm!!

Lauren BROWN-Gateshead Minors Meeting

North of Tyne Athletic Network Meeting-Fixture 5

It was the final meeting in a five match athletics Grand Prix series at Churchill Fields, Whitley Bay back on Sunday 27th July. The young athletes have been participating since early April in this fun event organised by NOTAN (North of Tyne Athletic Network). Four boys and four girls represented the club admirably and achieved great success!

In the Long jump both Ollie TELFER (3.71m) and Millie BREESE (3.07m) established new club records to win their categories.

Lauren BROWN (Y4) won the girls 600m in a good time of 2:09 and Millie won the 75m sprint. In the boy’s 800m both Ollie and Max BREESE ran close to personal bests to finish second and third in the year 6 category.

In the Howler throw the ‘BATLEYS’ won the year five and four categories Ailsa threw 24.7m and brother Gregor BATLEY 29.8m. Finlay TELFER and Lauren BROWN were runner’s up both with personal best throws of 25.13m and 19.85m!

Lydia SMITH completed her second athletics’ meeting finishing just outside the top three in all her events. She has grown in confidence and will do brilliantly next year!!

Well done to all the athletes who took part this season, they were great and had a fantastic time! Also a special thank you to all their parents who supported them, and NOTAN for hosting such a super event.

NOTAN 5 Team

North East Youth Development League-Monkton Fixture

On Sunday 20th July the Alnwick and Blyth junior athlete’s combined to form a team for the last time this season. It was a hot day at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow and some good results were achieved.

The ‘under 13 boys’ were joined by Benji GILLINGHAM who boosted their numbers to five, a record for this season! Together they managed to win the 75m hurdles & 1500m. They also achieved top three places in the High Jump, Javelin, 100m, 200m & 800m. They also represented the team in the Shot Putt and Long Jump. Finally at the end of the afternoon they managed third place in the 4 x100m relay. An excellent conclusion to the season!

Katie HILTON (12) was the Alnwick’s only U15 representative, however she competed well amongst much older athletes and managed second place in the Long Jump (3.78m) and fourth in the 100m! An excellent achievement.

Katie HILTON-Triple Jump

Peter SKIRROW (U17) turned his hand to yet another event and managed second place in the Triple Jump. His jump of 11.4m will gain him a national ranking, quite impressive with such little experience in this very technical discipline! Peter then went on to win the javelin and high jump competitions. Quite an afternoon’s performance!

The athletes have had a great season and competed well. They demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and participated well in a whole range of events that weren’t necessarily their specialism!

Team Alnwick!

North East Youth Development League-Whitley Bay Fixture

The Alnwick/Blyth Team made great progress on Sunday 29th June at the North East Youth Development League athletics meeting at Churchill Fields, Whitley Bay. The combined team amassed over one hundred extra points than at the last meeting and placed fourth just 7 points behind Birtley Athletic Club. The significant gains were made by reducing the substantial leads established by Gateshead Harriers and Jarrow & Hebburn in previous events.

The team’s success was based on excellent performances by the regular participants but even more significant was the contribution made by those who made their season’s debut. Harry BROWN (U13B) ran his first 800m race and Mark ROBERTS managed an excellent third place in the 100m (14.5’s). Mark went on to compete in the 200m and finally the 1500m where is ‘raw optimism’ in the final 400m almost produced him a top three finish, it was a fine performance which with a little ‘refining’ will produce great results in the future!

Katie HILTON and Lucy EMBLETON both competed in the U15 category. The Club has struggled in this age group in recent meetings so their participation in the 100m, 200m and high jump earned the team much needed points which helped boost their place in the overall ranking. Katie ran an impressive time of 13.6s to establish a new club record and achieve third place in her 100m race.

In the first two events of the day Max BREESE won the U13B hurdles, and in the Shot Ollie TELFER managed a personal best and club record throw of 5.93m to gain third place. Later in the day Max threw the javelin a massive 21.07m (another club record) to gain second place in that event. Ollie managed joint second in the high jump to round off an excellent day for the under thirteen boys.

Peter SKIRROW ‘cleaned up’ in the U17 mens category by winning the high jump (1.55m), long jump (4.81m) and javelin (24.58m),an excellent achievement!

The whole team participated with humour, enthusiasm and great spirit, as a result of this they were rewarded with a credible fourth place. The other Clubs are now within ‘striking distance’ and with just a few more athletes who knows what they can achieve?

Junior Harrier Mark ROBERTS

North of Tyne Athletics Network Fixture 3

The Alnwick team was boosted by the PLUMLEY brothers at the junior athletics meeting at Whitley Bay on Sunday 23rd June. George represented the Harriers in the year 5 age group (U10) and younger brother Jack at year 4. Both boys conducted themselves superbly, competed well and entered into the spirit of this multi-disciplined competition.

Junior Harriers

The Alnwick athletes once again demonstrated their skill in the Howler throwing. Max BREESE won the Y6 event with a big throw of 36.5m and Ollie TELFER was runner up with 35.6m. In the year 4 category Gregor BATLEY threw 30.4m to win the boys event and Finlay TELFER threw 22.56m. In Y5 Ailsa BATLEY managed a throw of 24.52m to finish in second place and George PLUMLEY 22.6m to finish just outside the top three!

On the track all the athletes ran well. Millie BREESE managed second place in the 600m (Y4) in a time of 2mins 16 and Ollie TELFER was runner up in his 800m race in a time of 2mins 55.

Jack PLUMLEY and Finlay TELFER

The Year 4’s had a very competitive long jump event with Millie jumping the furthest distance of 2.81m to win her category. George PLUMLEY and Ailsa BATLEY represented the year fives, Ollie (3.45m) and Max (3.16m) finished 2nd and 3rd in the Y6 competition.

The athletes had a super day, participated well and enjoyed themselves!!

Junior Harriers!

North East Youth Development League-Gateshead Fixture

A sunny, warm day blessed the athletes at Gateshead Stadium for the second NEYDL athletics meeting on Sunday 1st June. The four Alnwick athletes joined with Blyth RC to produce a small but quality team! The good conditions contributed to some excellent results.

The day got off to a good start on the track with Max BREESE (11) winning the under 13 boys 75m hurdles. At the same time in the Shot Putt Ollie TELFER (10) managed a personal best throw of 5.68m.

Max BREESE-800m Action

In the High Jump Peter SKIRROW (15) managed a personal best of 1.55m to win the U17 category. Later in the day both Ollie and Max competed in the U13 category to gain some valuable experience and finished in 5th and 6th places.

Peter SKIRROW-High Jump

In the middle distance races the U13 boys  ‘swapped’ events at this meeting, Ollie ran his first 1500m in a time of 5 min 49’s and Max ran the 800m in 3min 7’s. Both ran well and ‘notched up’ some more valuable team points.

Ollie TELFER-Shot Putt

Alnwick’s only sprinter on the day was Josh TURNBULL who represented the Club in both the 100 and 200m races. He ran well in a tough field and managed 12.9’s for his first race and 26.9’s for the second.

Josh Turnbull 100M

Nursing a ‘niggling’ back injury Peter SKIRROW ‘tactically dropped’ his track races and switched his skills to two further field events. In doing so he won both the U17 Javelin and Discus competitions! An excellent example of how being an ‘all-rounder’ can help earn the team maximum success!

The Alnwick/Blyth team once again finished in fifth position. Gateshead Harriers won the competition convincingly with North Shields Poly as runners up. However, the Athletes performed well and spread their talents as far as they could. Nobody was afraid ‘to have a go’ and their increasing confidence will help at the next meeting in Whitley Bay at the end of the month!

Junior Sports Report-18th May 2014

Two junior Alnwick Harriers took part in the North Eastern Counties Track & Field Championships at Gateshead International Stadium on Sunday 18th May, and the favourable warm conditions saw a number of personal best performances. Competing in the U13 category, 10 year old Oliver TELFER was first to compete on the field in the Shot Putt (3.25K) competition. Oliver threw progressively further with each attempt and a final 12cm personal best throw of 5.67 metres saw Oliver through to eighth place. Oliver then had a fantastic run in the 800M, equalling his personal best with a time of 2 minutes 51.47 seconds, finishing eleventh.

Next to compete in the U17 category on the field was 15 year old Peter SKIRROW. His personal best jump of 5 metres 17 cms set a new club record and also earned him a bronze medal in the event. Peter followed this with another bronze medal in the javelin (700g) throw, throwing 27.53 metres into a difficult blustery headwind.

Finally Oliver was back in action once more in the long jump, where he produced a massive 27 cm personal best in the long jump, with a leap of 3.66 metres to finish fifth.

NOTAN Athletics Grand Prix-Churchill Fields, Whitley Bay

The weather was kind on Sunday 11th May to the 8 Junior Harriers who competed at the second meeting of the North of Tyne Athletic Network Grand Prix in Whitley Bay.

Lydia SMITH (Y5) was Alnwick’s only athlete competing for the first time in this type of event. Lydia finished third in the Long Jump and fifth in the howler throw. An excellent start to the season, we’re sure she has a lot more to offer over the coming weeks!

The ‘seasoned’ veterans’ all performed well in their events. On the track Lauren BROWN (Y4) broke her own club record for the second time this season with a win in the girls 600m in a time of 2 mins 08. In the boys race Finlay TELFER managed a personal best time of 2 mins 19 . Ailsa BATLEY (Y5) ran well to finish third in her race.

Millie BREESE (Y4) won the girls long jump with a personal best of 2.79m. In the Y6 category Ollie TELFER won and Max Breese was third with another ‘family pb’ of 3.26m.

In the howler throw Lauren BROWN won her category and Gregor BATLEY managed a massive personal best throw of 26.79m to take second place in the year 4 boy’s competition.

The athletes formed a great team today, they encouraged each other to achieve their best and most of all enjoyed the day!

North East Youth Development League – Monkton

Five Alnwick Harriers Juniors joined forces with Blyth RC on Sunday 27th April to compete in the first North East Youth Development League (NEYDL) meeting of the season. This team competition requires the clubs to field athletes from U13 to U17 in all the main track and field events. Points are awarded for their success and participation, the team with the most points ultimately wins the competition on the day!

NEYDL 1 Monkton 2014

The weather was a bit grim at the beginning of the day and the persistent rain had turned the shot putt circle into a swamp. However, spirits weren’t dampened and in the very first event we got off to a good start with a win by Ollie TELFER in the shot putt U13B category. Ollie managed a personal best throw of 5.55m.

After stripping off several layers of warm clothing Ollie had to quickly run off to join Max BREESE in the 75m hurdles. It was the first time either of the boys had ever run over eight ‘high’ hurdles in succession so were relieved to ‘survive’ and finish in fourth and fifth place!

The day slowly began to brighten and Jess BARNABY sprinted well to finish second in the U15 girls 75m hurdles. Jess ran a good time (15.3s) proving how practise & good technique wins the day!

In the long jump Catherine BARNABY and Max BREESE represented the U13’s well and notched up some more well deserved team points. Back on the track Catherine was also our sole representative in the 100m sprint!

By lunchtime the rain had passed by and enough surface water had been cleared to start the high jump competition. Peter SKIRROW won the U17’s competition convincingly with a jump of 1.53m, and Max BREESE having already completed his maximum number of field events managed achieve first place in the U13 boys category as a ‘guest’.

In the javelin Peter SKIRROW won his age group with a personal best throw of 28.66m. Catherine BARNABY competed in the final girls field event where she managed a personal best in the shot putt and collected the first place ‘B’ athlete points!

Back on the track we had more personal best performances by Ollie and Max in the 800 and 1500m races respectively. Peter SKIRROW was again in action in the 400m and to conclude the day we managed to assemble both a boys and girls 4x100m relay team. Both teams avoided ‘relay disaster’ and ran well with good changeovers!

Alnwick and Blyth formed a great team on the day. The athletes performed with great enthusiasm and ‘spread’ themselves brilliantly across a huge range of events. Finishing in overall fifth team place was a fantastic achievement. Hopefully at the next meeting we can attract a few more new faces and build on our success!!!!

Anne Marie Readshaw Open Track and Field Meeting -13 April 2014

Twenty three Alnwick Harrier Juniors travelled to Shildon to compete in the Anne Marie Readshaw athletics meeting on Sunday 13th April. This excellent turn out enabled us to compete in every junior age category (U11 to U17) for both the girls and boys! The athletes represented the club in sprints (60m, 100m, 150m &200m), long jump, middle distance running (800m and 3000m) and throwing events (Shot and cricket ball).

Anne Marie Readshaw 2014

The cold windy conditions were ‘challenging’ for both the athletes and the superb parent supporters that had turned out in huge numbers to encourage the competitors. Athletes from Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, County Durham and Yorkshire gathered for this well attended and very fiercely contested athletics meeting.

This was the first opportunity for several of our athletes to compete in this type of competition but they all rose to the challenge. There was a lot of uncertainty and ‘nerves’ but good humour prevailed and they all survived!! All of the juniors excelled and there were notable medal winning performances by three athletes.

On the track Rosie MURTON (U17) ran strongly in the 3000m to win convincingly in 10min 46.1s. Ollie TELFER (U11) managed third place in the 600m with a strong run and a personal best time of 2:03.01.

Ollie TELFER and Rosie MURTON

In the Field events Hannah TAYLOR (U11) threw 18.59m in the Cricket ball throw to win the silver medal. An excellent achievement on such a windy day!!

Well done to all athletes, parents and coaches who took part; we put in an excellent performance! Full results are available at www.shildonrunning.co.uk.

2014 Junior Events

North of Tyne Athletics Network Meeting

The season has started with athletes from school years 3-6 competing at the first NOTAN (North of Tyne Athletic Network) grand prix event on Sunday 6th April. The 5 Alnwick athletes got their usual ‘don’t expect too much’ speech, emphasising that it’s ‘early in the season just try your best’! However they all ignored that and went on to win several events, set plenty of PB’s and break a few club records!!

We once again demonstrated our great ability to throw things! In the ‘howler’ they won the Y4 boys (Finlay TELFER), Y6 boys (Max BREESE) categories and Lauren BROWN and Millie BREESE managed 1st and 2nd place in the Y4 competition!

On the track Lauren BROWN (Y4) won both the 600m and 75m sprint setting a new club record for her middle distance race.

Oliver TELFER won the boys (Y6) long jump with a new U11’s club record of 3.56m

Lauren and Millie excelled again and finished first and second in their category.

All the athletes have moved up a category this year where distances have increased and points are harder to score. They all adapted well and are looking forward to another successful season!

NOTAN once again organised an excellent friendly event where they not only encourage children of all abilities to participate but also manage to offer help and guidance on how to compete to the best of your ability.

Junior Xmas Handicap

26 brave Junior Harriers aged 8 to 17 gathered on Alnmouth beach on Sunday 15th December for the annual 2k handicap race. A strong cold easterly wind whipped off the sea making running conditions ‘testing’. However nobody was deterred and Brenda and Sue had done a fine job of awarding the handicaps so nearly all the field finished within two of minutes of each other!

Overall winner was Ciara HEALEY followed closely by Darren MATTHEWS then Lauren BROWN in third place. Only six seconds separated the three runners and they showed great determination to hold their positions in the sprint for the finish.

Everyone ran well and there were some exceptional individual performances. However as a Club they all demonstrated great team spirit and sportsmanship. Thank you to all the runners and their parents that turned out to support them in freezing conditions!

Junior Sports Report-5th October 2013

Congratulations to the Alnwick Harriers Juniors who contributed to an excellent team performance today. Jarrow and Hebburn AC held a ‘Minor XC Championship’ involving clubs and schools from across the North East. Even though we managed only to field three teams (U9G, U9B & U11B’s) in the six categories that were contested we finished alongside Sedgefield Harriers in an incredible joint second overall place! Birtley AC were the overall competition winners.

Lauren BROWN (U9G) was our highest placed runner completing the 1km course in 4.12 to take second place. Her team mates weren’t far behind and together secured second place in the team competition.

The U9 boys ran a slightly longer hillier course. They were closely grouped and lead in by Gregor BATLEY to achieve third overall team. The U11 boy’s managed second place in the two lap team race, Ollie TELFER was first Alnwick boy home. Finally Ailsa BATLEY did us proud as the sole Alnwick year five (U10) girl finishing in 8th place in her race.

A great day where good solid performances across all the categories produced an excellent result against some strong clubs! Thank you to all the athletes and their parents for supporting them.

Alnwick Harriers Juniors performed exceptionally well on Sunday at Gateshead Stadium. Four athletes concluded a brilliant season by winning trophies in the overall Grand Prix series! Over two hundred athletes from across the North East have competed in five track and field meetings over the last three months. Each athlete is awarded points for their individual performances and these are totalled at the end of the series.

In the U9 category Finlay TELFER won the trophy for third place and Millie BREESE for coming fourth. In the U11′s Max BREESE won sixth and Oliver TELFER fourth. An excellent set of results!

Lauren BROWN was awarded the Alnwick Harriers U12 athletic achievement trophy. Lauren received this for overcoming huge pre race nerves, reducing her 400m time down to 1.21s over the season and improving enough to win two medals!

In this final competition of the season the ten athletes won five medals, established a new club record and recorded several personal best performances! Euan FRIEND jumped a huge 1.75m in the standing long jump, pretty impressive for an 8 year old at his first competition. Ailsa and Gregor BATLEY, Hannah and James TAYLOR all put in good performances to finish just outside the medals.

Thank you to all the athletes and their families that supported them for turning up and representing the club so well!

Howler – Max BREESE 32.5m bronze and Millie BREESE 19.8m gold.

Junior Sports Report-21st July 2013

Alnwick Harriers Juniors squeezed in another athletics meeting on Sunday 21st July, hosted by the North of Tyne Athletics Network (NOTAN) at Whitley Bay. On a superb summers day at a well organised event all the Juniors performed well. Most notable improvement was by Lauren BROWN who pb’d in all events at only her 2nd competition. Lauren won the Girls 400m in 1minute 22 and finished in 2nd place overall in the Under 9’s competition.

NOTAN Quadkids

The next meeting at Gateshead is “the big one”. It concludes the summer series where we have 4 athletes challenging for overall series medals!

Junior Sports Report-14th July 2013

Alnwick Juniors (Y3-6) had another successful athletics meeting at the Gateshead Young Athletes Meeting on Sunday. On a super summer’s day they won 8 medals, established two new club records and achieved 14 personal best’s between them!

Gateshead Medal Winners 14th July 2013

In the 50m sprint Finlay ‘Freight Train’ TELFER railroaded himself into the year 3 sprint final with spectacular energy and enthusiasm! He was joined by James TAYLOR who ran superbly to secure the silver medal in a new club record time of 8.65s.

Tarik YILMAZ demonstrated brilliant sportsmanship in the Long Jump as an error by the officials initially denied him of a medal. However, his good virtue and courtesy paid off and was later awarded the bronze medal for his jump of 3.20m. Well done Tarik!

On the track there was some great racing. James TAYLOR ran a personal best of 1min 20s to secure the bronze medal in the U9 400m. In the 600m Max BREESE set a fantastic pace to enable Oliver TELFER to take the silver medal in 2min 05s. They both achieved personal best times.

The Howler throw once again produced Alnwick’s biggest medal haul. In the U9 category Millie BREESE took silver and James TAYLOR bronze. Max BREESE won silver in year 5, however the ‘throw of the day’ was made by Ailsa BATLEY. Ailsa (U10) won the gold medal throwing 21.86m establishing a new club record!

Hannah TAYLOR had a successful morning achieving personal bests in three of her four events. An excellent effort for only her second athletics meeting! Lauren BROWN demonstrated huge courage in overcoming nerves in her first competition; she ran well in the 400m and narrowly missed qualification for the U9 sprint final.

Gateshead 14th July 2013

The fifth and final meeting in the series is next month. Alnwick currently have four athletes in the top five of their respective Grand Prix categories so the last competition will prove to be an exciting one. Well done everybody!

Junior Sports Report-30th June 2013

The third North East Youth Development League Division 2 fixture took place at Churchill Playing Fields on Sunday. Twelve Alnwick Harriers travelled to Whitley Bay to join forces with allies Blyth Running Club for the penultimate match against Tynedale Harriers, Gateshead Harriers, North Shields Poly and South Shields Harriers.

NEYDL Churchill Playing Fields

There were some excellent performances throughout the day and the warm conditions saw plenty of club records tumbling. U13 Jade CRADDOCK set the first record of the day when she finished fourth in her 100M heat in 15.2 seconds. Junior Sports Report-30th June 2013

Alnwick were well represented at Gateshead Stadium on Sunday 30th June where there was a huge turn out of athletes from across the North East of England. Twelve juniors from years 3-6 competed in the third ‘Young Athletes Meeting’ and contributed to our most successful competition so far this season. A record amount of personal bests, club records and medals were achieved over the course of the morning.

At their very first Athletics competition Tarik YILMAZ, Lauren RENNIE and James TAYLOR all qualified to the sprint finals. James went on to take the Silver medal in his category. Max BREESE ran a personal best in the 75m sprint to make it through to the Year 5 (U11) final.

In the Howler throw Millie BREESE and Ailsa BATLEY both took bronze medals and Max BREESE produced another massive personal best and club record of 36.83m to take the Bronze medal in the U11’s.

There were solid performances in the Long Jump. Hannah TAYLOR and Oliver TELFER both performed well in the U11 category displaying good technique and consistency. Tarik YILMAZ ( U10) jumped 3.33m establishing a new club ‘U11’ record, quite an achievement for his first event aged only 9!!

The U9’s took the biggest medal haul in their Long Jump. Millie BREESE won bronze in the girls, whilst Gregor BATLEY and James TAYLOR took bronze and silver for the boys.

In the middle distance races Joel ELLIS ran a superb debut 600m demonstrating an excellent ability to pace himself. He will make huge improvements in forthcoming races!! Luke INGRAM (U11) produced another solid performance in his 600m; he slowly worked his way through the field to run another personal best time. In the 400m Finlay TELFER (U9) fuelled by a promise of a trip to the cinema took 5 seconds off his pb to finish in fourth place in 1 min 30 s. James TAYLOR finished ahead of him in 1 min 25 s taking the Silver medal.

Thank you to Gateshead Harriers for hosting such a super event. They did a great job in what is not an easy competition to organise. Well done to all our athletes who performed brilliantly amongst competition of the highest standard!

Junior Sports Report-22nd June 2013

14 year old Owen DAVISON was chosen to represent Northumberland at the English Schools Athletics Association Combined Events Regional Final in Kingston-Upon-Hull on Saturday. Competing in the Junior Boys Pentathlon Owen got off to a strong start in the 80M Hurdles, finishing sixth in a new Alnwick Harriers club record time of 14.3 seconds.  His weakest event, the Shot Putt, followed where his eleventh placed best throw of 6.09M saw him drop to ninth place overall. However sixth placed jumps of 4.57M in the Long Jump and 1.47M in the High Jump saw him close the gap on the eighth placed athlete. After a long day of eventing, a fifth place in the 800M, with a respectable time of 2 minutes 25.6 seconds meant that Owen finished a very creditable eighth overall (fourth out of Northumberland, Tyne & Wear and Durham, first for Northumberland) and his pentathlon points total of 1758 set a further Alnwick Harriers club record.  Well done Owen!!

Junior Sports Report-16th June 2013

Four Alnwick young athletes treated their fathers to a day out at Churchill Playing fields on Sunday! The Quad Kids event was held on the track at the home of the North Shields Poly Club in Whitley Bay. A beautiful warm day at an excellent and relaxed venue produced some great results.

Quad Kids-June 2013

The BREESE family cleaned up in the Howler throwing; Millie won the U9 girls event with a pb of 16.06m and Max won the U11 boys category with a pb and club record of 33.38m! All the hours of throwing practice in their street finally paid off!!

Finlay TELFER managed to achieve personal bests in three of the four events, improving his total score by over 10% since the last meeting at Gateshead just three weeks ago! His brother Oliver ran the 75m Sprint in 12.00s to achieve a new Club record (CR) and finished second in the Long Jump with a leap of 3.30m (CR).

We had a great ‘Fathers Day’ at a superbly run competition. The next meeting is at Gateshead on 30 June, if anyone would like to ‘have a go’ let me know!

Junior Sports Report-2nd June 2013

On Sunday three Alnwick Harriers competed in Division 2 of the North East Youth Development League at Wentworth Stadium, Hexham combining with Blyth RC once more to form a composite team.

Conditions were ideal for competing, warm, with little wind and many personal best performances were achieved. The first event was the high jump where U15 and U17 boys competed concurrently. Alnwick’s U15 Owen DAVISON and U17 Peter SKIRROW were the only boys remaining in the competition once the bar was raised over 1M 50cm. Both took advantage of the temperate conditions winning with personal best heights of 1M 53cm. Owen gained further personal bests in the 100M and 200M.

Alnwick’s U17 Adam WEIGHTMAN tested himself on the shorter 800M distance teaming up with Blyth’s Joseph DUNGWORTH.  Down the back straight both of the athletes pulled away convincingly from the rest of the field and Adam sat on the elder athlete’s shoulder for almost the entirety of the two lap race before Joseph was able to kick and pull away from Adam on the final straight. Adam finished second overall (first ‘B’ athlete) with a personal best time of 2 minutes 17 and a new club record.

Peter SKIRROW also took a early lead down the back straight of his 400M hurdles race and went on to take a convincing win equalling his own club record of 71.8 seconds. He later set another club record when he won his javelin event with a throw of 24.69M.

Alnwick/Blyth finished fourth with 292 points. Full results are at www.necaa.info. Alnwick Harriers travel to Whitley Bay for the next league match on 30th June.

Max BREESE competing with the Year fives smashed the current club record by over 7 metres with a throw of 31.59m!

Matty WILKINSON excelled with the most inspiring run of the day showing how perseverance pays in the end! There were good solid performances by Oliver TELFER and Benji GILLINGHAM who both ran personal bests in the 600m to finish fourth in their respective heats.  Luke INGRAM accomplished solid performances in all his events and once again won the prize for happiest competitor!!

Further club records were set by U17 Peter SKIRROW when he finished second in both his 400M Hurdles race and the javelin.  Gutsy performances from Owen and Connor, moving up to compete as U17s, helped Dan MALLEN and Peter to take second place in the U17s 4 x 100M relay.

Junior Sports Report-21st April 2013

5 Juniors travelled to Gateshead this Sunday for the Young Athletes meeting. Athletes from school years 3-6 compete in four events during the course of the morning. They are required to participate in a sprint, middle distance race, a throwing event and the long jump. Points are awarded based on their performances in each discipline and medals are awarded to boys and girls in each event and overall for the whole morning.

There was a huge turn out of athletes from across the North East for the first of this five meeting series. Competition was fierce across all the age groups on a particularly chilly morning! However, they all tried exceptionally hard and we achieved some good results.

Oliver TELFER performed well in the Long Jump to win a silver medal in the Year 5 category. His brother Finlay in his debut Harriers competition managed an equally impressive bronze medal in the Year 3 Howler throw! Max BREESE finished just outside the medals in his category with an impressive 23m howler throw.

On the track Millie BREESE won her heat to qualify for the Year 3 sprint final where she finished an impressive fourth despite a huge height disadvantage over the other finalists!! Luke INGRAM also ran well at his first track meeting and was seen smiling at every event!!

All the athletes showed exceptional sportsmanship and courteousy and are looking forward to the next meeting.

Junior Sports Report-14th April 2013

Two Alnwick Harriers competed in the first north east outdoor track and field competition of the year, the Anne Marie Readshaw Open Track and Field Meeting, at the Stadium 2000 in Shildon.

Making his debut for Alnwick Harriers, new recruit Connor ARMSTRONG showed some promising results, when his leap of 4.49M into an extremely blustery headwind earned him a Gold medal in the U15 Boys Long Jump.  Still facing a strengthening wind down the home straight, Connor finished fifth against a competitive field later that afternoon in the 800M, with an impressive time of 2 minutes 24.3 seconds.

Moving up to the U17 Boys category this year, Peter SKIRROW took Silver in the High Jump in particularly difficult, wet conditions.  His leap of 1 M 40 cm equalled the first place jump, though ‘count back’ rules meant he finished second overall.

Alnwick Harriers next track and field competition is at Jarrow on 28th April when they compete in the North East Youth Development League.

Northern Inter Counties Schools Cross Country Championships

Seven members of Alnwick Junior Harriers represented the county at the Northern Inter Counties Schools Cross Country Championships in Cleveland on Saturday 9th February. There were excellent performances all round by the Juniors.

Rosie MURTON finished fifth overall in the Intermediate Girls and first from Northumberland. Completing the race in a time of 18 mins 29 secs her performance was particularly commendable on a very heavy course at the Lawrence Jackson School. Also competing in the Intermediate Girls was Charlotte BASTON.

Amy THORNE finished eleventh for the county in the Junior Girls (Years 8 & 9) and Ben KELLY running in the Junior Boys finished twelfth.

In the Intermediate Boys (Years 10 & 11), Adam WEIGHTMAN was one of the youngest boys to run for Northumberland and did so finishing in a strong fourth position with teammate Daniel LENG 12 seconds behind in sixth place for the county.

James BOLAM was the sole Alnwick Harrier running in the Seniors category.  Rounding up the day with a tenacious performance James finished fifth for the county.

Following on from the Inter Counties, Rosie MURTON, Adam WEIGHTMAN, Daniel LENG and James BOLAM have all been selected for the national English Schools Championships at Catton Hall, Derbyshire in March. Many congratulations to them!

Junior Sports Report-19th January 2013

The Scottish National Indoor Open on Saturday saw hundreds of athletes of all ages taking part in a packed day of sport in the first Scottish Athletics event to be held at the new Emirates Arena, venue for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Competing in the IAAF U16 category, Alnwick Harriers’ 14 year old Peter SKIRROW competed in the 60M Hurdles, High Jump and Long Jump. Unfortunately due to an overlap of events, Peter was unable to complete his high jump competition, as he had to dash off for his hurdles race. However his run of clear jumps up to 1M 40cm before he left was sufficient to secure third place in his age category. In his hurdles event he matched his PB of 10.97 seconds, which was enough for fourth place. And in his long jump competition, a leap of 4M 56cm saw him through to another third place.

Junior Harriers Xmas Handicap

On Sunday 16th December the Junior section of Alnwick Harriers hosted their Christmas Handicap. The event took place at Alnmouth beach and was 2k in distance. Congratulations to 9 year olds Hannah TAYLOR and Oliver TELFER who won the girls and boys trophies by finishing 1st and 2nd overall! Many thanks to the organisers, marshals and parents for making this a very enjoyable event.

Junior Sports Report-25th June 2011

12 year old Alnwick Harrier Sophie Bronze competed at the inter-county English Schools Athletics competition at Gateshead Stadium on Saturday.  Sophie went on to win the High Jump competition, setting a new championship record with an awesome leap of 1M 58cm.  Not only is this a new north-east schools record, but is also a Grade One Standard and guarantees Sophie entry into next year’s ESAA final.  It also currently ranks as the greatest height cleared by any 12 year old girl in the UK this year. Well done Sophie!!

Alnwick Harriers resumed their alliance with Blyth Running Club for the fourth and final Young Athletes League Match at York on Sunday.  Although the final league positions were all but decided at the previous match, the young Harriers still gave their all, producing some very worthy performances. Multi-eventer Sophie Bronze won her first official pole vault competition, vaulting a Grade 4 standard 2M 30cm, Sophie then went on to win her high jump competition with a Grade 2 personal best jump of 1M 52cm. Making her debut for the club, Beth Lewington set a new club record with her second placed discus throw.

Junior Sports Report-15th May 2011

Six Alnwick Harriers competed at the weekend’s ‘North Eastern Counties Track and Field Championships’; a showcase for some of the region’s finest athletes, held at Gateshead International Stadium.  Although this year they didn’t bring home any titles, nonetheless there were still some fine performances from the young Harriers.

Highlights from the weekend include on Day 1, U13 Alexander Tait’s third placed High Jump and U15 Harvey Coxon’s third placed Shot Putt. And in difficult blustery conditions U15 Sophie Bronze finished fourth setting a new club record in the High Jump, with a Grade 3 standard leap of 1M 45cm.   U15 Peter Skirrow set a further club record in the Triple Jump, jumping 9M 10cm to take fourth. More club records were set on the track in the 75M & 80M hurdles respectively, with Alexander’s 2nd placed 14.24 seconds and Peter’s 5th placed 15.36 seconds.  And U15 Adam Weightman ran a valiant 1500M against an older, more experienced field to finish 12th in a time of 5 minutes, 4.13 seconds; a creditable time given the difficult conditions.

On Day 2 Peter and Harvey took Silver and Bronze respectively in the Javelin throw.  And Sophie Bronze set another two club records in the Shot Putt with a fourth placed throw of 6.86M and Long Jump with a seventh placed 4.22M. On the track, U15 Daniel Leng culminated the weekend with a silver medal in the 3000M.  His time of 11 minutes 7.66 seconds set Alnwick’s final club record of the championship.

Anne Marie Readshaw Meeting-17th April 2011

The North East’s first outdoor track & field meeting of the year got off to a scorching start on Sunday, 17th April, 2011 when ten young Alnwick Harriers travelled to the Anne Marie Readshaw open Track & Field Meeting at Shildon. Hot conditions with little wind, meant some blistering early season performances from Alnwick; with particularly inspiring results from Alnwick’s U15s, who brought home eight medals and set six new club records. U15 Harvey Coxon took Alnwick’s only Gold of the day, with some powerful throwing in the 4Kg Shot Putt, backing it up with a bronze in the long jump. Peter Skirrow set a new personal best and club record when he jumped 4.39M in the long jump to take silver.  He later went on to equal his best in the High Jump, with 1M 40cm to take bronze and on his 400M debut, he earned a further bronze. Sophie Bronze came away with two bronze medals in both the High Jump and Shot Putt; but her most impressive performance of the day came in the hotly contested 800M, when Sophie smashed her previous personal best by 11.5 seconds, completing the two lap race in 2 minutes, 34.5 seconds to finish fourth. The final medal of the day came from Daniel Leng, making his track debut in the 3000M.  Daniel ran a sensibly paced race to finish third in a new club record time of 11 minutes, 12.9 seconds.
