Aviemore 10k and Half Marathon Club Trip

On Sunday 11th October members of Alnwick Harriers travelled north of the border on a massively subsidised club trip to take part in the Aviemore 10k and half marathon. Here’s a report by Tracey SAMPLE:

“18 Harriers completed the half marathon and 8 completed the 10k. A number of Harriers also went along to support as they were injured and could not run, although I suspect they actually went for the beer, food and the waterslide in the hotel pool! It was also good to see a fair few of our Wooler Running Club friends lining up too.

Both races started and finished in the same place with the half marathon going round Loch Morlich before meeting up with the 10k route which had come straight down the hill to finish over the last 3 miles together.

With it being a net down hill race and weather conditions perfect, it was going to be fast. But the Saturday night all you could eat buffet and Sunday morning all you could eat breakfasts were nearly the undoing of a number of athletes who said the black pudding and scrambled eggs didn’t taste so good on its way back up at mile 4!

Despite having a week mountain biking in Aviemore, Ian SIMON had a great race to finish 17th of the near 1100 competitors in the 13.1 mile race, just off the podium for his veteran age category in 4th. Dominic HARRIS had set himself up for failure declaring that he had age on his side on the previous evening but he redeemed himself by finishing 2 minutes quicker than his predicted time in a huge personal best. Next home for Alnwick was Tracey SAMPLE in a massive half marathon best. Tracey was 29th female having had a cracking battle with Dave BARTRUM up to mile 9 before running very close to her 5k PB for the year over the last part of the race. Denise DRUMMOND also ran a PB to be 2nd Alnwick female home, as did Maureen Bartrum who was delighted with her time. Bad luck to brave Tim SHEPHERD who suffered an injury early on in the race and was forced to walk a large proportion of the route.

In the 10k, Samantha FENDER was first Alnwick Harrier to finish, whilst Una McCAIG was 4th in the over 60 category despite actually being over 70!

The event was well put together and the organised fun (and by this I mean the warm up routine the athletes were encouraged/forced to endure at the start) was enjoyed by the majority of the competitors. The positions below reflect the gun finishing positions and chip finishing times:
