A report by Mike TELFER:
“The biggest and most fiercely contested event in the TELFER family racing calendar was once again held at Warkworth Show on Saturday 22nd August. The annual 2.5km event starts within the castle, goes out across the drawbridge then through the fields to Watershaugh Road before doubling back along the river past the Hermitage. The competitors climb the steep path up from the river then race around the moat finishing under the drawbridge where the crowd gather to cheer them in.
Alnwick Harriers were well represented by 10 club members of all ages. Steve CARRAGHER lead the charge and won the race in an excellent time of 7 minutes 47 seconds. Even more impressive was that Steve had already raced and won the parkrun at Druridge Bay earlier in the day!!
However, slightly behind Steve the real battle was taking place. Having announced to the crowd on the start line that there was no way Ollie TELFER or any other of the juniors present would beat him, Mike TELFER had set the challenge!
After the first 200 metre sprint out of the castle Mike was beginning to regret his confident prerace rhetoric as 4 of the Juniors (with an average age of 11) were still ahead of him! Fortunately they slowed slightly on the climb up to Watershaugh Road and Mike edged ahead. However, running back along the riverside they could be heard (Ollie in particular) taunting Mike and they thought they were in with a chance of beating him. Being determined to savour victory over his children and the others for probably the last time since the battle began seven years ago, Mike kept going and on the finish line just edged out Harry BROWN followed by Ollie TELFER!
Lauren BROWN (10) finished just behind the boys completing the 2.5km course in 9 minutes 15s winning the U16 girls category and placing her 6th overall!
Most of the 70 competitors aren’t quite as competitive as the Telfer family and the fun run was once again a huge success and greatly enjoyed by seventy people of all ages that entered. The event was excellently organised and the marshals once again did a fine job guiding the runners around the beautiful course.”
