Blyth and Wooler Blind Social Handicap!

A great night was had by all on Wednesday 26th June as we invited Blyth RC and Wooler RC for our annual Blind Handicap in Hulne Park. There was a great turn out by all clubs for the undulating 5 mile route, where teams of 3 had to guess what time they’d complete the course in (no watches or Garmins allowed). Spurred on by ravenous midgies and the promise of great food and booze at The Oaks afterwards, the trio of John ROSS (Alnwick), Shi Shi Ord (Wooler) and Iain SINGER (Blyth) were the losers and thus winners of Adam SPILLER’s world famous wooden spoons by finishing furthest away from their predicted times.

There was a tight battle between 3 teams for the honour of finishing nearest to their predicted times. In first place, 25 seconds outside their time, was the team of John COCKBURN (Alnwick), Harry PORTEOUS (Wooler) and Davina LONSDALE (Blyth). Next came Rob NIXON (Alnwick), Pam GIRDWOOD (Wooler) and Karen SINGLETON (Blyth), followed by Jo GASCOIGNE-OWENS (Alnwick legend) and the Blyth pair of Daniel N’JAI and Callum STOREY.

An honourable mention should also go to the fastest team on the night which was the young duo of Alnwick’s whippet Daniel LENG and Blyth’s speedster Jake JANSEN.

The coveted 2013 Wooden Spoons

Well done to the team who helped make this event another great success. In particular thanks should go to Adam SPILLER and Tracey SAMPLE, for setting up the event, sorting the route, making the spoons, prize giving, time keeping, etc, etc! Also thanks to the on course marshals Phil LEE and Anne ALLAN, and the team sorters Mary PLUMLEY, Ruth DOCTOR and John ROSS.
