David LOWE, the fastest Harrier over half marathon distance this year so far, sends us this report regarding his Olympic Torchbearer duties in Morpeth last week. Sounds like a day to remember!
“What a fantastic day I had. 12 torch bearers met at Guidepost Middle School at 8.15 on Friday morning. Seemed a little early as I was only due to carry the torch at 10.48 approx. I spend most of the next one and a half hours talking to Jim Alder. What an interesting gentleman, I have plently tips to improve my running. Wished I had met him 20 years ago I may have had a sub 3 hour marathon. Other torchbearers included an Olympic Table Tennis player (going to this Olympics), a Swedish explorer and a guy who carried a fridge on his back while running the Great North Run. Amazing! We were all dropped off at our allocated points in the pouring rain. I was the last one so decided to keep the cape on. The crowds where fantastic all looking my way, scary and exciting at the same time. Finally Jim Alder arrived to transfer the flame (the kiss). It was a really touching moment when he reached out to hold my hand as the flame was transfered. A day I will never forget. Still on a high.”
