Junior Round-up – North East Youth Development League

The Alnwick Harrier Juniors made club history at the weekend by winning their league in the North East Youth Development League.

The composite team they formed with Blyth Running Club finished ahead of Blaydon, Tynedale, South Shields/Elswick, Jarrow/Phoenix and Gosforth/Wallsend.

Winning three out of four of their matches they have gained promotion to the first division for the first time. A fantastic achievement for two relatively small clubs!

The warm humid day produced some exceptionally heavy rain showers with all the athletes and spectators getting drenched on multiple occasions.

Despite the rain, there were excellent individual performances.

In the sprints, Sam Potts and Lydia Smith both won their 100m races. Lydia in her first competition as an U17 also won the 300m and formed part of the girls’ winning 4 x 100m relay team.

Lauren Brown was runner up in the U15G 300m.

Thomas Davison ran a quick 200m to finish in 25.6s!

In the middle-distance races, Sam Potts was once again victorious winning the 800m by a
comfortable margin. Ollie Telfer had similar success winning the U17 men’s race in 2min 06s.

Ailsa Batley finished 3rd in the U17 800m and Chloe Givens finished 4th U13G. In the 1500m Lauren Brown finished 2nd U15G and Ava Findlay made her debut league appearance in the U13 girls’ race.

The throwers once again had a good week with Finlay Telfer winning both the shot put and hammer.

Ailsa Batley won the U17G shot put and Alfie Temple was runner up in the U13 boys’ competition.

Harris Hall won the U13 javelin with Ruaridh Batley as runner up. Gregor Batley won the U15 javelin and Antje Hall came second in the U17 category. Leila Thompson won the U13 girls’ javelin with an excellent 22.73m grade two throw.

Leila Thompson also won the U13 discus and Oscar Chisholm was runner up in the boys.

Despite having her injured ankle in a brace Talia Thompson won the U15G discus and Ellie Price was second.

Talia continued her success winning the shot with Olivia Temple finishing in 3rd place. Finally Talia managed to come second in the javelin, a good day considering her very restricted range of movement.

Ollie Telfer jumped 1.60m to finish joint first in the high jump and Lauren Brown 3rd. Billy Clayton managed a good personal best jump of 4.03m in the long jump.

Considering the exceptionally difficult wet conditions the athletes scored highly and managed a convincing match win.
