North East Athletics Grand Prix Meeting

Lauren BROWN and Talia THOMPSON competed at the final North East Athletics Grand Prix meeting on the evening of Wednesday 8th August. The summer athletics series comprises of six evening competitions where athletes can compete in any discipline and score points towards to an overall competition place. On this evening Lauren ran the 3000m where she finished first in the Under 15 girls race.

Talia participated in all the matches throwing in either the Shot Put, Javelin, Discus or Hammer, however, the athletes are limited to three events in any one evening. Each age category has athletes from two school age groups and Talia was competing as a first year Under 15.

As a ‘young’ U15 Talia has had an excellent season consistently finishing in the top three places in all her events, repeatedly breaking and extending her own club records. Going into the final competition Talia was in second place in the overall Grand Prix standings. Throwing an excellent personal best of 8.91m in the Shot she won the competition and placed second in the Javelin with another personal best throw. This excellent combination of results was enough to push Talia one more place up the overall results table securing the overall Grand Prix victory. An exceptional result for an athlete in the first year of their age group.

Talia has trained hard over the last year travelling to Gateshead twice a week for additional coaching with Gateshead Harriers. This result was a great reward for her exceptional commitment and all those who have supported her along the way.
