Helvellyn Trail Race/Ullswater Trail Race

A number of Harriers headed across to the Lake District on Saturday morning to take part in the “Dirty Double” organised by Lakeland Trails. This comprised of a 15k race on the Saturday afternoon in the shadow of Helvellyn and a 14k along the banks and hills above Ullswater the following afternoon. Many thanks to David HINDMARSH for organising what was a fantastic trip for all those who attended and also to the club for their generous subsidy!

After a bright and early start on Saturday morning 11 Harriers took part in the first of the races which started and finished at Glenridding. After a hard and seemingly never ending drag uphill past the Helvellyn Youth Hostel, the race hit some fast and muddy downhill stretches before ending with a nice flat section meaning there was something for everyone! First Harrier home for us was Dominic HARRIS in 1.09.27 showing that not only is he a decent road runner, but also has loads of potential on the hills. He finished just over a minute ahead of Adam SPILLER, who in turn was clear of our 3rd finisher Dean STACKHOUSE. A couple of minutes further back was Mark DOCTOR and he was just over 2 minutes clear of our first female finisher, Alice TETLEY-PAUL. David HINDMARSH was next followed by Dave BARTRUM, Lisa BASTON, Conrad STEWART, Maureen BARTRUM and Carol DAVISON.

The Harriers then travelled back to Keswick for a shower, food and, for some, lots and lots and lots of alcohol. The following day, after not much sleep, the Harriers went back to Glenridding for the Ullswater leg of the weekend. Those feeling queasy were relieved to hear that the boat taking runners across the lake to the race start had been cancelled due to choppy waters. Therefore the emergency 13k race route was utilised. This race had lots of very runnable flat sections, a long steep climb and less in the way of muddy downhills compared to the day before. We were joined on the day by Adam FLETCHER, Ruth DOCTOR, Katie BLACKBURN and Mary PLUMLEY who’d travelled over for this race, though one Harrier was unable to race due to levels of intoxication.

First home was experienced fell runner Adam FLETCHER who was an excellent 7th of nearly 400 runners in 58.43 and was winner of the male 50 category. Adam SPILLER raced well once again to finish 25th, whilst Dean STACKHOUSE, David HINDMARSH, Mark DOCTOR and Alice TETLEY-PAUL were within 5 minutes of each other. Katie BLACKBURN had a good run to finish 2nd of the female Harriers and Lisa BASTON did well to make the start after picking up a slight injury the day before.
