Northumberland Coastal Run

Many congratulations to just under 1000 runners for completing the 2016 Eclipse Translations Northumberland Coastal Run on Sunday 24th July. On this occasion the weather was kind to us being overcast, not too warm and most importantly without the usual strong headwinds! We’d like to thank the many companies and organisations who have helped with another very successful staging of this event. Apologies if we’ve missed anyone but thanks to Start Fitness, Northumbria Water, National Trust, Beadnell Boatclub, Alnmouth Football Club, Alnmouth Village Golf Club, the Red Lion PH in Alnmouth, Rothbury Motors, Motorcare Ford Alnwick and Hipsburn First School amongst others! We’d also like to extend a massive massive thank you to HM Coastguard, The RNLI,  Rapid Reaction First Aid and the Great North Air Ambulance. A runner collapsed towards the end of the race and was dealt with by a group of fellow runners until the emergency services took the casualty away. We are pleased to say that the man is doing well in hospital and should be released in a day or so. Without the help of this group of runners the situation could have been a lot lot worse. We thank you! Last of all we’d like to thank our brilliant main sponsor Eclipse Translations who have supported the event for over 5 years now!

There have been some fantastic comments on Facebook, Twitter, email and in person on the day by many of the competitors. One of the things commented on and praised just as much as the stunning scenery was the superb support of the marshals. Once again you’ve done the club proud with your vocal support and your urges to tiring runners! Without you the race would not be possible. Finally many thanks to the committee members of Alnwick Harriers for organising the event, particularly to Tracey SAMPLE and Sue BOLAM who are the two stand out members!

Here are the full results

Now to the race itself! Many congratulations to the 2016 winners Carl AVERY of Morpeth Harriers and Alnwick Harriers legend Jo GASCOIGNE-OWENS!! Both of these athletes won the event for the 2nd time, with Carl producing back to back wins and Jo winning again after her 2013 success. Carl won in a brilliant 1.13.34, the fastest time in the race since 2008, and was almost 4 minutes clear of his nearest rival. Jo posted an excellent 1.27.17 to finish just ahead of 2 rivals after an excellent battle throughout. Age category winners for the men were former race winner Darren PURVIS of Birtley AC (male 40), Jason OLD of Elswick Harriers (male 45), Rob HANCOX of Morpeth Harriers (male 50), Ian NORMAN of Heaton Harriers (male 55), Ian BROWN of Tynedale Harriers (male 60), Mark McNally of Elswick Harriers (male 65) and Derek POOLE of Holme Pierrepoint AC (male 70). For the ladies the winners were Michele THOMPSON of North Shields Poly (female 35), Gillian CARR of Corstorphine AAC (female 40), Kim BLUCK of Tynedale Harriers (female 45), Fiona DEACON of Nidd Valley RR (female 50), Marie DROZDOWICZ of Elswick Harriers (female 55), Maggie LORAINE of Gateshead Harriers (female 60), Alexandria ROBERTS of Saltwell Harriers (female 65), Sandra POOLE of Holme Pierrepoint AC (female 70) and Joyce ARCHIBOLD of Claremont Road Runners (female 80). The team prizes went to the Tyne Bridge Harriers trio of Mark FENWICK, Terry SCOTT and Paul O’MARA, whilst North Shields Poly won the female prize thanks to Jacqueline PENN, Michelle THOMPSON and Suzanne THEW.

The overall first Harrier to finish, just over a minute ahead of Jo, was new recruit Dan TURNBULL. In his first race for us he showed what a class act he is by clocking 1.26.05. Adam FLETCHER was our 2nd male finisher ahead of the amazing Dominic HARRIS! Doms progress this year has been astounding and shows no sign of stopping. For the ladies behind Jo were Karen KELLY and Laura STUBBINGS, both of whom had good races. In terms of pb performances by Harriers there are simply to many to mention here, but everyone ran really well!
