The following day Clare HISCOCK and Mark DOCTOR were taking part in a very testing 21k race, the Borrowdale Trail Race which was part of the weekends Keswick Mountain Festival. The race started at Portinscale and skirted Derwentwater, taking in some extremely hilly sections and rough ground, meaning that times were well down on their usual half marathon performances! There were just over 180 competitors. Results:

77-Mark DOCTOR 2.20.27

141-Clare HISCOCK 2.44.45

Also in Cumbria the EASTOE’s were taking part in the Howgill Harriers 10k. On a testing course in Kirkby Stephen the pair improved on their times from last year by 3 minutes. Gay finished 43rd in 1.01.35 and Richard 44th in 1.01.36.

Junior Sports Report-19th May 2013

The number of Alnwick Junior athletes attending the second round of this fiercely contested series grew to nine .

Alnwick’s strongest event today was the Howler throw. Gregor BATLEY and Finlay TELFER led the ‘medal charge’ with silver and bronze in the Year 3 boys category. Millie BREESE almost doubled her personal best to take the bronze medal in the year 3 girls!! Ailsa BATLEY in her debut for Alnwick Harriers took silver in the Year 4 age group establishing a new Club record! Max BREESE competing with the Year fives smashed the current club record by over 7 metres with a throw of 31.59m!

On the track there were good middle distance performances all round with the athletes demonstrating how good pacing and keeping a ‘cool head’ improves performance! Matty WILKINSON excelled with the most inspiring run of the day showing how perseverance pays in the end! There were good solid performances by Oliver TELFER and Benji GILLINGHAM who both ran personal bests in the 600m to finish fourth in their respective heats. Luke INGRAM accomplished solid performances in all his events and once again won the prize for happiest competitor!!

Benji GILLINGHAM was the only Alnwick athlete to make the sprint final this week but in doing so ran superbly well and set a new club record!!

All the athletes tried exceptionally hard today and performed brilliantly in a competition of the highest standard! Official results will be published next week on Gateshead Harrier’s web site and Club records will be confirmed soon.

Well done to everyone who took part in the Les Allcorn 10k and Junior Race, which was held once again in glorious weather in Hulne Park on Tuesday 7th May. As always many thanks to His Grace the Duke of Northumberland for allowing the event to go ahead. Also thanks to Rapid Reaction for their First Aid skills, Up and Running (Gosforth) and Alnwick Trail Runner for their generous spot prizes, Jess CAMPBELL for photos, Helen PATTERSON and Helen THOMPSON for the catering and MC Mike HENRY. Special mention to Mary PLUMLEY and Sue BOLAM who both do a fantastic job organising the event and arranging marshals! And of course thanks to the superb marshals. Thanks to the weather there was a very good turnout of both Seniors and Juniors tonight.

The evening got off to a cracking start from an Alnwick Harriers point of view with Adam WEIGHTMAN and Rosie MURTON winning the Junior Boys and Girls races! Morpeth Harriers’ Philip WINKLER was going for his 5th successive win in the Junior Race, but it was Adam who prevailed on this occasion against his older rival, finishing just under 20 seconds ahead. 3rd place went to Adam SHAFIQ, whilst the next Harrier was 5th placed Ben KELLY who performed superbly considering he’s in the Under 13 category. In the Girls race Rosie was a convincing winner, beating Morpeth’s Lizzie RANK and Alnwick’s Amy THORNE by well over a minute. Age category winners were:

Boys Under 17′s-Philip WINKLER (Morpeth Harriers)

Girls Under 17′s-Rosie MURTON (Alnwick Harriers)

Boys Under 15′s-Adam WEIGHTMAN (Alnwick Harriers)

Girls Under 15′s-Lizzie RANK (Morpeth Harriers)

Boys Under 13′s-Ben KELLY (Alnwick Harriers)

Girls Under 13′s-Abbie LEWINGTON (Alnwick Harriers)

Boys Under 11′s-Ethan McGLEN (Gateshead Harriers)

Girls Under 11′s-Callie HENDERSON (Unattached)

Boys Under 9′s-James TAYLOR (Unattached)

Girls Under 9′s-Eve LEWINGTON (Alnwick Harriers)

The winner of the 2013 Les Allcorn 10k was Low Fell’s Jonathan ARCHER who finished the course in 34.39. Jonathan finished almost a minute ahead of 2nd place Andrew HUSSEY representing Cheltenham Harriers, who in turn just pipped Morpeth Harriers youngster Sam HANCOX into 3rd. First Alnwick Harrier was once again Bruce CROMBIE who bettered his finishing position from last year by one place to finish 5th, winning the male 40 category! He was followed home by 16 year old Daniel LENG and Graham SYERS. Other age category winners were Jim ALDER (male 50) and Norman CLARK (male 60) both of Morpeth Harriers. Low Fell put out a strong team tonight and comfortably won the mens team prize.

The ladies race was a total success for arguably the greatest female Alnwick Harrier of all time, Jo GASCOIGNE-OWENS! Jo won the female race, knocking 12 seconds off her 10k pb and setting another 10k female club record in the process. A great achievement considering the hard course. She was over 3 minutes ahead of her nearest rival Angela McGURK of Jarrow and Hebburn AC, whilst North Shields Poly’s Suzanne THEW was 3rd female. 4th overall was unattached Hilary ROSS who won the female 55 category, whilst our own Ella BROWN won the female 35 category, with Marie DROZDOWICZ of Elswick Harriers taking the female 45 category. Thanks to great runs from Sarah FAIRBAIRN in a huge 10k pb and Ella, Alnwick Harriers won the female team prize!

One of the most encouraging aspects of tonights race was some of the young Harriers who were taking part in their first 10k’s. Daniel LENG is now veteran of this distance having taken part in a number, but well done to Isaac MOSS, George SKIRROW, Suzie BARWISE-MUNRO and Molly MURTON for their performances in the race!
